2015 Golden Globes Red Carpet Best Dresses Competition

Let’s play a game, like Tina and Amy at this edition of the Golden Globes: let’s play a Red Carpet game of who’s best dressed! Oh, wait – wasn’t that already done before?

We’ll complicate things a bit, then: we’ll compare actresses who were wearing gowns from the same designer! And if possible, we’ll cross-examine those with the catwalk models showing those looks! That gets interesting, huh? And we’ll make it interactive too – you’ll be able to choose, comment and vote for your choices! Let’s roll that Red Carpet!

I’ll cheat and save you the scrolling trouble upfront by giving you my best dressed right now: Lupita Nyong’O and Emma Stone (surprised?). There was a lot of glamour, a lot of bridal whites, a lot of floor sweeping gowns and a lot of Versace at the 2015 Golden Globes, but these two definitely stood out for me!

Giambattista Valli Couture’s purple ombre dress was divine on Lupita! And how beautifully she accessorizes everything with that gorgeous smile of hers? And the hairstyle – she’s always extremely creative with her haircuts and that’s capital for defining one’s personal style. Emma Stone was dressed in a jumpsuit by Lanvin! Although envied by many, the jumpsuit is a tough fashion cookie! One would have to assume an evening of dehydration or else they’d have to face the toilet onesie nightmare!
But Emma was a charm! Smart glamorous and definitely playful – that’s how I would describe her Globes look!

A special mention goes for Melissa McCarthy who really made an effort and looked stylish at this edition of the Golden Globes! I’m aware that she’s constantly under fire for her uninspired fashion choices on the Red Carpet, but this time she’s my favorite newcomer! Frills, bows, sequins and peep toe pumps in the same equation do throw the ensemble out of balance, but overall, it’s a notable improvement we should all support!

Now for the face-off: starting with the Chanel girls!

Keira Knightley vs Dakota Johnson in Chanel dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

Hard to compare these two – like putting an insects taxidermy catalog next to a disco ball and choosing a favorite! If anything, we’d all agree that Karl Lagerfeld sure has a vast creative palette!

Amal Clooney vs Felicity Jones in Dior dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

Swimming against the flow by saying that although indisputably beautiful and stylish, smart and all around amazing, George Clooney’s wife, Amal, wore one of the most boring dresses of the night! Yes, it’s old school Dior (Fall Couture 2007) and yes, she wore it with grace and panache, but my! Oh-my! Was she safe playing this outfit! Just like Felicity Jones, whose gown, although a gorgeous jewel tone, ended up being just plain. There’s no risk taking, no fashion fun there!

Maura Tierney vs Louise Roe in Jenny Packham dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

Did you read what I said above for the Dior girls? Well.. looking at Maura and Louise, I’m forced to reconsider and maybe go with a ‘fabulous’ label for the Dior gowns! Maybe, just maybe, I’ll use the reconsideration pretext to excuse myself from describing the Jenny Packham ladies! If Maura Tierney’s dress can still be appreciated, like you appreciate a soggy raisin for the flavorful future taste of wine it can produce, Louise Roe looks like she just cinched two bed sheets together with a shiny cordon and prayed all eyes would stick to the sparkly buckle and ignore the frumpy rest! At least they’re both wearing dresses from the same Fall-Winter 2014 collection!

Katie Holmes vs Joanne Froggatt in Marchesa dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

It’s been a while since we last talked about Katie Holmes on the Red Carpet! Since she’s no longer forced to tilt her head back or flex her knees to align herself to her husband’s height, Katie is tall as a Roman Column! And proud too – notice the train on her strapless dress? It only makes her look taller! And how cute of her – she arranged her loooooong pony tail on the same side as her gown’s train! Didn’t your stylist warned you, Katie? Tail on tail it’s a no-go! As far as 34yo Joanne Froggatt goes – isn’t her dress graceful? For a 60year old, that is! Joanne is ahead of her time and age, by 30 years!

Gwyneth Paltrow vs Emily Blunt in Michael Kors dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

Between a bridal white Emily Blunt walking the Globes Red Carpet and a hot pink Gwyneth Paltrow skipping the arrivals and popping directly on stage for the presentations.. I would choose the latter. Spring arrived earlier for Gwinnie as she tousled her locks and enhanced the beach glow on that divine, always beach-perfect body of hers! On the other hand, Emily Blunt looks stuck … ‘Into the Woods’!

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller, Kate Mara in Miu Miu dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

Knowing the creative genius behind Miu Miu, I surely expected more from Miuccia Prada, but maybe our ladies weren’t ready for some daring cuts and surprising prints like Sienna was? Both Kate and Maggie compete for the ‘meh’ label on the Golden Globes Red Carpet!

Anna Kendrick vs Camila Alves in Monique Lhuillier dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

After playing Cinderella, Anna Kendrick seems to be stuck ‘Into the Woods’ like her co-star Emily Blunt. The dress, the look is so fairy-tale ready and so deja-vu on the Red Carpet, it’s hard to make this style count as personal! Camila Alves gown, on the other hand, looks interesting – too bad for the hairdo – it really took the ensemble to a new level of ‘candy wrap stiff’.

Julia Louis Dreyfuss vs Lorde in Narciso Rodriguez on the 2015 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Like comparing day to night, I like both ladies and their outfit choices are implacable for this edition of the Golden Globes awards! Julia’s style grows better with every year, with every event! The only downside of both ladies’ style is the straightening of their naturally gorgeous curled hair!

Cindy Crawford, Amy Adams, Heidi Klum, Jane Fonda, Jessica Chastain, Kate Hudson in Versace dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

I did warned you about ‘a lot’ of Versace at this year’s Golden Globes, didn’t I? Each lady gorgeous in her own way (Cindy seems to have a preference for cobalt blue Versace gowns – this one looks almost identical to one she wore at the MET back in 2009). But if I’d had to pick just one, I’d certainly go for Kate Hudson or Jane Fonda.

Despite her fabulousness, Jessica Chastain looks like melted chocolate in her crimpled Versace while Amy Adams’ seems to have bleached a gown for the occasion. Heidi Klum’s red Versace, although perfect in its own right, doesn’t stand a chance in front of Jane Fonda’s red Versace!

Lena Dunham, Katherine Heigl, Christine Baranski in Zac Posen dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

While Lena Dunham seems to be partial to ‘unusual’ more than fabulous style, I’ll focus my comparison on Christine and Katherine. And opt for Christine’s wine dress as Katherine has too much decollete and too much mermaid finish to impress me.

Jennifer Lopez vs Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad dresses at the 2015 Golden Globes

J.Lo released her inner Diva for this edition of the Golden Globes while Chrissy seems to be wearing yesterday Givenchy couture. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I tend to go for Chrissy because of her beautiful smile. J. Lo’s seductress game fails to impress me.

A special mention for the ‘back game’ won, miles ahead, by Kate Hudson! She crushed her bridal white competitor, Rosamund Pike who opted for a custom made Vera Wang. What’s the purpose of custom-tailoring if not ‘fit to measure’ and perfectly adapted for the wearer? That dress needs to be ‘Gone, Girl’!

Curiously, my favourite was by far Emma Stone, for the unexpectedness of her choice. I am quite tired of seeing women dressed as princesses ( Armanis, Saabs, Lhuillers…) or in the other extreme, dressed as slutties ( Versaces) on the red carpet.
I am addmitedly a sucker for Lanvin ( I am buying there for + 15 years !! ) and that jumpuit just cemented my opinion on the incredible work of Albert Elbaz.
My 2nd option was Viola Davis in Donna Karan.
I loved the J-Lo’s dress-caftan. I cant understand the harsh criticism she is getting. I mean, what people expected from her ?
It was quite a boring red carpet in my opinion.
Ps : Amal was quite a deception . Those gloves ? oh girl, please…

thank you Ana! Thank you for your feedback and for sustaining my views – seriously?! What in the world has taken on the media – they’re all praising Amal like she would be fashion’s Saint Graal! a new Angelina! Geez! I’m certain she’s amazing at what she does, but that dress (and those gloves) were by far yawn-worthy!

I think I grew tired of JLo’s Diva moments. Although she made an interesting outfit choice and she always seems to favor Zuhair Murad for official Red Carpet business – at such point that her choices became somewhat predictable and… all the same?

What I loved. lupita, Emma Stone, Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, Melissa Mc, Jessica Chastian. These women all looked lovely, stylish and comfortable in their outfits and their skins.
Who I did not like at all Amal Clooney ( the gloves were kind of off), Dakota Johnson (her dress made me think of a shiny shower curtain and she looked boring in it.
Jennifer Lopez ( she tries too hard and I can see her trying). Kate Hudson ( why is she still here I mean come on).
I liked Julia Louis D, Lorde and Emily Blunt.
Everyone else was just okay.
I look forward to the See what my favourites will wear to the Oscars. I like the fashion/clothes but I HATE the award shows.

I like Lupita’s dress ( I won’t wear it myself), What I liked the most is the way she kept her hair, as East-African as her, she honored our traditions, I wished she added a diamond broche in the hair!

Jessica Chastain was lovely! The problem with Amal, is maybe the fact that she’s not used to that! she didn’t know how to behave to honor that dress and gloves! she was totally boring and I didn’t expect more from her! Heigl, Jones, Dunham were really elegant!

I think what people are foregoing about Amal Clooney is that she is a lawyer, not an actor, movie star, model, or a fame hunger person who just wants attention. She went to the event to support her husband, which I think was nice of her. You could tell that she was not impressed to be there, I mean why would she be? She does work that has and can have a real impact of change for good in people’s lives. Movies and tv shows are good but they in the long run are not that important. She looked decent in her gown, yes the gloves were a tad off but she did not look tacky or tasteless, and she certainly does not appear to be a band-wagon type person life wise or fashion wise.

I believe I have grown tired of red carpets and award shows I can’t separate the red carpet, an ugly red by the way, and the actual show.

I made two choices:
– worse dress or whatever it is: Rosamund Pike. Such a pity since she’s such a beautiful English rose who lost her moment to shine while she could at last.

– Lorde is my favorite since I’m tired of all these princess gowns and the poses. Lorde in her suit so close to what she usual wears is therefore my favorite.

Further I agree with Ellington’s comment on Amal Clooney.

#7 kpriss on 01.16.15 at 12:50 am

Clearly Amal wasn’t there to gain Red Carpet recognition, but I thought all the wave of attention because of the ‘dress’ and the entire look she had on that night were somewhat misplaced. there was hardly anything notable about her appearance, fashion-wise.

I too enjoy the Red Carpet parade – just as I did the Fashion Shows until the business side of fashion overwhelmed the originality and the quality of the collections. So maybe until the day I’ll grow really tired of the business of styling this and that celebrity, I’ll keep on enjoying the awards season as well. I must admit – I’m aware of the choices being political above all – but the movies in the competition? I enjoy every single one of them! I love movies and watching movies (and some TV series) with sparkling passion and that, I know for certain, will never fade!

Adriana – true word about Rosamund! I appreciate her, honestly, and I think she’s an amazing actress – she really takes you deep into a vortex of feelings, making you sense the character in all its colors – she’s so dramatic and always seems so smart! But that dress was wrong, oh-so-wrong!

Ellington – you’re right – why is Kate Hudson there?
