This year’s Red Carpet at the 81th Academy Awards Ceremony was, in fact, white! There’s maybe something in the air, something that made the ladies attending the glamorous event, wear white dresses!
I doubt that’s the recession, it’s like the ladies felt a marriage breeze around the Shrine Auditorium, like they all wanted to be 2009 Oscars Brides tonight. The Oscars Red Carpet, is, however, renowned for being not just the Kodak Theatre promenade for movie stars but for being the World’s most talked about catwalk! (don’t miss the rest of the pictures right after the jump!)
Previous predictions and speculations went mostly in the Designers direction, even if everyone was expecting a follow-up of the gray and blue trend spotted at earlier events this season. White is surely a hard one to pull without looking like a Red Carpet virgin. So let me show you the brides first, and you’ll be the one to choose the winner!
Starting with an actual winner – for Best Supporting Actress – Penelope Cruz had a window curtain-ish buttery white vintage Pierre Balmain dress. Sarah Jessica Parker was perfectly fairy tale-ish with a Christian Dior Haute Couture.
Taraji Henson had a beautiful Roberto Cavalli, Marisa Tomei a long, strapless modified Versace, Anne Hathaway opted for a sparkling body hugging Armani Prive, Jessica Biel had a Prada bow-ed dress, Jennifer Aniston was very Valentino, Nancy O’Dell had a Pamela Rolland gown, Miley Cyrus pulled her mermaid number with Zuhair Murad, Evan Rachel Wood the very Elie Saab we were talking about earlier and.. surprise!! Even Mickey Rourke had a white suit (Jean-Paul Gaultier)! It’s like they all took inspiration from the Bride Wars! Who’s your favorite? (photos via celebutopia)
UPDATE: Tina Fey (wearing Zac Posen), Nicole Kidman (wearing L’wren Scott) and Melissa George (wearing Dolce & Gabbana) proudly represented the White trend at the 2009 Oscars.

They ALL looked magnificent, but I’m partial to Aniston’s choice.
Sorry, I (or we) didn’t like SJP’s choice at all. That fairy-talish dress made her look older on tv as we saw it. Her boobs “dissapeared” at moments with certain movements under her arms! Not charming. Sorry Sarah Jessica but the Carrie days are over!
Everybody looked great as “red carpet brides”. Winner to us was though Marisa Tomei. Also because we love her natural beauty.
Even Mickey made the effort to look not too rebellious for the event.
We were very, very moved at the speech of the young script-writer (gosh, forgot his name) who’d got the Oscar for the script for Milk. The guy, grown up in a Mormon community told the audience how Harvey Milk had inspired him to come out of the closet and also to write this script. A wonderful moment. Sean Penn, Gus van Sant (and a lot off people in the audience) and we on the couch were in tears. Sean Penn, well deserved Oscar, made us cry again when he made his strong statement. Also because the way Robin looked at her husband. We were very, very proud our country was the first with equel rights for all people.
Wonderful and with taste, no dramas, which made us shed a tear too, was Heath Ledger’s family accepting the Oscar in Matilda’s name.
We had a nice evening, no night of course, watching and commenting on the show and the neighbours didn’t came to bother us!!
hathaway and henson definitely my favorite in white!
simple and stunning
great texture
I did not watch the Oscars as I don’t find them interesting and they go on far too long for me, but I do like to look at the dresses the next day via photos.
Yes Adriana the dresses would mos def look best viewed in person and then second of course would be tv but even then that can be off too.
I have to go by the photos that I see as that is what I have to go by when I scope fashion magazines.
As for the white dresses I like Marisa Tomei’s white dress the best. Its beautiful and she looks lovely in it. As for SJP and Penelope Cruz’s wedding dress/debutant ball gowns I prefer SJP’s from looking at the photos. Penelope’s reminds me too much of curtains.
Oh and I just saw a photo of Tina Fey’s dress on another site discussing the Oscar dresses, she looked lovely and I liked her white dress too! You should try to post a photo of her Kpriss, I know that she is not known as a fashionista, style leader type but she is a very funny, smart and talented woman and she is accessible . : )
I adore the two Dior Haute Couture Gowns worn by Sarah Jessica Parker and Marion Cottillard, they were exceptional!!! Also the appearance of a very up and coming Label, worn by Nathalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon. Rodarte!!! OH MY GOD, I can’t stop praising all those gorgeous Gowns!! Lanvin, Swinton! Versace, Tomei! Cruz, Balmain! A 60 years old Vintage Dream, Wood, Saab! … but … there are also black sheeps like Miley Cyrus fishscale gown, or the cruelty of Beyonces knockwurst dress, Disguisting!!! But at all it was an unforgetable evening full of Highlights…Thank you all you gifted Designers and Actresses !!!
Right Meredith Gray, Reese Whitherspoon looked great! And I wanted to mention Tina Fey earlier. But Ellington did yet. She looked wonderful too. So au naturel in her great dress.
That’s the great fun of watching an Award show with a girlfriend and commenting, joking and have lots off giggles about some stars and not to take everything too serious just having fun and enjoy the beauty of fashion and the art of acting….
anne hathaway and jannifer aniston really were the best dressed. :)
Update on the way! (three more white dresses)
Side-question – was it just me, or Reese looked pregnant?
Reese pregnant? Maybe its her new found love? Nah, I think we should have noticed that lol! We were watching everything and anything and everyone’s faces and so on….Hmm, I see you’ve added some more photos. Mickey must be very pleased surrounded by these goddesses!
Gosh, look at Marisa….sighs….
I forgot to mention that we thought we could drape some sheets on ourselves like Jessica Biel.
Melissa George, Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Pene Cruz – my favourites.
Nicole in particular looking like she born into this world wearing that dress
