Christian Louboutin has been dubbed a lot of things: from genius pioneer to a merciless commercial visionary taking advantage of clichés to make fortunes (oh, and there were rumors implying that the red soles idea was not even his own).
But the simple truth is that every girl out there dreams of owning (at least) one red-tinted pair of high heels. And since they normally come with a 3-figure price tag, how about something more affordable from the iconic footwear designer? And no, there’s no DIY involved (so far). Something that was actually at the very origins of the legendary red soled shoes?
Christian Louboutin’s foray into cosmetics is not like any other one. He puts forth his best idea ever: red nail polish that’s ‘giving back to nails what the shoe took from the nails many years ago’ – according to the designer’s own words. The ‘Rouge Louboutin’ nail polish comes in a very suggestive bottle with a cap reminding of the high heels especially made for the polish launch occasion. Even the bottle has a subtle ombre effect and the shape was inspired by 18th Century European buildings. Everything works in favor of the ‘fashion pretentious must-own’ belief, not to mention that the red shade itself is made with the same pigments as the iconic red soles!

World’s highest ballerina pointe shoes ‘Ballerina Ultima’ (first created in 2007) now come forth for this new enterprise Mr. Louboutin is entering, with polish bottles retailing $50 each. So far, the Rouge Louboutin is the only shade available (and that exclusively through Sasks Fifth Avenue). However, a clever 3-step marketing plan was set in motion with this first polish color, the ballerina shoe association, and the David Lynch film being just the beginning!

The second phase rolls out with the Rouge hitting stores like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Sephora while the end of August sets the last phase in motion: 3 new lines of nail polish with 30 more shades complete the Louboutin nail lacquer collection! Just when they said that the nail polish frenzy was history! Pff!
Giving assurance that a single layer of his lacquer offers the same quality and coverage as 20 layers of the conventional polish (or at least as far as the Rouge Louboutin goes), would that be enough to justify the $50 price tag? (just to make the honest comparison, a bottle of OPI Race Red costs 10 times less the new Louboutin. And that’s saying something, coming from world’s most appreciated nail polish brand, OPI.)

Thank you, ladies, for reassuring me that fashion hasn’t clouded our better judgement! (after all, it’s just red nail polish, right?). Oh, Ana, I too bought a bottle of Chanel (a pink polish), some 10 years ago. I remember being so disappointed with the actual quality of the lacquer, I gave it away to a friend! Now I realize I too could’ve keep it for home decorating purposes! tssss
