With every new cover graced by the amazing Joan Smalls I keep wondering what’s going on with the fashion people and how they allow themselves to be so dull and just ‘meh’ when they have such incredible potential on their hands!
Knotted in some cliché threads, blinded by safe choices, Joan Smalls’ covers end up being a huge disappointment to me, regardless of how enthusiast I am about her being on a new magazine cover. Take this Vogue Russia as photographed by Richard Bush – what’s so appealing about this picture that would make you pick up the magazine from the newsstand and take it home with you?
Joan is so much more beautiful than this over-photoshop clone of hers. There’s too much discipline, too much polish on this April cover. I’m really crossing my fingers for the inside content to be better. The modest preview had me hoping, although there’s still something weird about it as well.

It’s a bloody shame that beautiful women are photo shopped like this. I’m sick and tired of it.
She looks almost ten years older and boring on the cover. Shame!
(Dutch Vogue should have used orange for April and used a model other than caucasian on the cover! My criticism was rewarded with one ‘like’ and one attack on Facebook. Someone wrote “if it’s a must that a black model grace the cover it’s not a good idea blablabla….” She got one ‘like’ as well. Then I wrote I wasn’t talking about colour but about diversity and I got one ‘like’ and that was it. A comment on Facebook is old the next day. As everyone knows. So I guess I have to write something like this every month!! )
not all the good girls are popular ;) We just have to stick together, we’ll make them hear our voice ;)
Believe me: putting a black girl on a magazine in Russia STILL is considered something of a brave.
Russians are racist as hell. They hate blacks, they hate jewish, they hate chinese and they hate gipsies.
But when they go to South America, they just love people there and their way of life. Go figure…
I believe you ana, I read a lot of other things besides fashion and fashion related things……I am well informed……
Sadly I see racism grown fast in Europe as well…..
Despite all I am not willingly to give up hope the good ones among us stick together…..
Ha, I signed a petition tonight via Change.org
“Stop de Russische anti-homowet: Nederlands Nationaal Geschenk voor Poetin @PutinRF.”
“Stop the Russian anti-gay law: Dutch National Gift for Putin @ PutinRF.”
Oh, that is true.. I forgot to include the gays.
Bravo, girl!!
I am glad that Joan has this cover but I do wish that they made her look better.
I am beyond tired of racist people, racists attitudes, hate and plain ignorance. Fashion thinks they are forward thinking but they are governed by very small minded people.
Russians seem to have xenophobia down to a science. The hate and racism displayed by that country is almost unbelievable, but when one considers that they had been isolated from a lot of European and Western influence for many many decades it follows suit, but I do wish that they would get over themselves and cut out that hateful attitude and behaviour.
