I guess there’s no more MTV Video Music Awards if there’s not a controversy to fuel the fame monster (wink) for days on end. While Kanye West was struck by the fatherhood epiphany and he feels remorseful about his VMAs stage antics with Taylor Swift, Imma take this further and remind you all that if you sweet teens and tweens were watching the awards ceremony, chances are they pinpoint the rubbing against a man’s crotch as the must perform dance move. In any dancing occasion.
That’s only part of the controversy. But what did you honestly expect when you have Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga attending the same show, on the same stage? Before getting to the stage, though, the 2013 MTV VMAs Red Carpet is teaching us that leg slit is the new black. Angelina Jolie had no idea what she was starting with her mythical Versace leg slit at the 2012 Oscars.
Katy Perry in custom Emanuel Ungaro, Rita Ora (in Alex Vauthier), Selena Gomez (in Versace), Ellie Goulding were all wearing leg slits for the occasion. Lady Gaga (in custom Prabal Gurung), Jennifer Hudson (in Dior), Taylor Swift (in Herve Leger) on the other hand, were surprisingly dressed up and well… too decent for what was coming up next…
Even Miley Cyrus (in Dolce&Gabbana) and Robin Thicke looked normal prior to their performance together – which, in case you haven’t heard already – was the talk of the show and the audience is still chewing on Miley’s… dance moves. So who was this year’s 2013 MTV VMAs most controversial Red Carpet appearance? Erin Wasson! Her look reminded me of a sad combination between Kate Moss’s Met Gala turban look and Rose McGowan’s spiderweb dress years back, also on the VMAs Red Carpet! But overly-confident Erin Wasson wore this type of look before (below on the Golden Globes Red Carpet).
Ciara kept faithful to her Givenchy Couture looks while cool kids Willow and Jaden Smith kept faithful to their coolness.
Sarah Hyland (in Marchesa) must have taken a page of style from Iron Man’s book of fashion while Iggy Azalea (in Emilio Pucci) felt the undressing pressure since she was presenting next to Lil Kim (who exposed her lingerie from underneath a skin-tight black overall).
Talking about presenting the show… And the stage: Lady Gaga opened this year’s MTV Video Music Awards with an energetic round of ‘Applause’ in which she incessantly changed costumes and wigs until she was left with a long blond wig and a handful of shells and other carcasses to protect her modesty, circa Blue Lagoon. Since she was the one to kickstart the event, she spent the rest of the evening front row, high as a kite and drunk as a unicorn. Applause!
Miley Cyrus who got us used to an aura of controversy surrounding her stage persona, was scheduled to perform her own song and then a duet with Robin Thicke. And what better way to celebrate the very essence of Blurred Lines but with a racy, walk-like rubbing dance right there on the VMAs stage? Yep, that’s all Miley. All Thicke had to do was just be. Which he did. Like I said, hours have gone by, but the scandal is still there, delivering plenty of food for thought for the scandal-hungry audiences out there!
Compared to that, the NSYNC reunion and Katy Perry’s Roar were just lullabies and rainbows.
All that’s left from each and every MTV VMAs year after year is the scandal&controversy. It’s deeply encoded in our culture’s DNA. (all the images included in this story were masterfully shot by the talented photographers serving Getty Images)

WT* has happened to music? Real music?
Really, is it me or looks everyone tacky? I can handle a lot, am very open minded and I love Amsterdam’s red light district as it used to be. Today it’s a lot different. The people above fit in fine there. Geez……and why are the Smith kids there anyway? We all know what VMA’s and today’s music is about: s*xy and raunchy.
Loved Nick Cannon’s tweet: “Remind me never to let my kids into showbiz …Thanks”. Stick to that Nick and Mariah!
Angelina’s leg again….the next time you mention this I write a looooooooong scream here. That chicken leg act was not exactly new. Jolie made it look foolish.
And Beyoncé’s hair grows real fast!! Noticed it alreaydy.
And this. The most important thing about this show. Reading the internet and the comments on ‘Miley’s act.’ Why on earth does everyone blame Miley? It was her’s and Robin Thicke’s act together for crying out loud!!! Why it’s always the woman, a female who gets all the anger. Or I can’t stand that. I liked Robin Thicke’s song until now but the video? No thank you. Some performers are best to listen to but never ever watch their act(s). He is one of those.
Apologies dear Kpriss, you said it was Robin’s and Miley’s act….I was so annoyed by the many articles and commenters just pointing at Miley. You know what they say: it takes two to tango!
Ah, thank God! I have read a lot criticism about a 20 year old girl and a 36 old mysoginist!!
And when does Taylor Swift realise that a fling is not the same thing as a relationship?
Yes, I’m done now. ;)
Sorry, not finished…..Beyoncé?? Lolz…that’s because I saw a few photos of Bee with a bob like Rita Oro and don’t get it what cut Bee really has?
Nah, once when MTV was THE music channel their VMA shows were awesome. And there was no social media. That makes all the differences.
Ben Affleck must have felt great since social media did stop talking about him being the new Batman.
It’s sort of boring in the entertainment field today on the internetz…..;)
It is so sad to see the psyche of popular music on display when being able to sing is such a gift. Music is so powerful in our lives & to see Miley & Robin Thicke squander it & cheapen something that is so blessed is truly sad.
When I watched parts of the VMAs I am glad that when I was young back in the 1980s – 1990s the artists that shaped my youth where The Clash; David Bowie; Duran Duran; Pearl Jam etc – I feel sorry for young people today.
I thank god that Miley is not my daughter! What a shocker – acting like a ladette & proud of it. I am just glad that 99% of the comments around the blogosphere are shocked by the display & not supporting more.
Finally my husband sums it up – she is not iconic enough to act like that! Be a singer not a stripper….just sayin!
