M.I.A. Paper Planes From Slumdog Millionaire

With the Oscars just around the corner, it was the perfect time for a piece of Slumdog Millionaire!

And not just any piece! A M.I.A piece! Talking about Santigold/Santogold yesterday, got me thinking about M.I.A. because she was also one of my 2008 favorites. This pre-Oscar Friday Break is about Slumdog Millionaire’s Paper Planes song. So wonderful and addictive! Enjoy! (you can read more about the song and view the original Paper Planes video right after the jump!)

After seeing Slumdog I said well done M.I.A! If people haven’t heard you before, after seeing Slumdog, they can’t pretend not knowing who you are anymore!

Despite of it being featured on Pineapple Express and Hancock soundtracks, I think it goes far better with Slumdog Millionaire’s theme! The song is based on a riff from The Clash from the song Straight to Hell. Written and produced by M.I.A, Paper Planes was included on her second album (Kala , 2007) and it was the absolute crossover for the underground singer M.I.A. since everyone (and their dog) fell in love with Paper Planes instantly.

M.I.A. stands for Missing In Acton (like Acton, London) and Missing in Action but it’s the stage name for Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, British (from Sri Lankan Tamil descent) performing artist, songwriter, producer (her label is called N.E.E.T) , graphic designer (and fashion designer). On February 11th, she had her first baby – a boy, born just two days after her performing at the Grammy Awards (on her actual due date, wearing that House of Holland infamous dress previously, disastrously seen on Aggy!)

Kpriss and readers: second song is not longer available….sighs….

I LOVE M.I.A. too!! A lot! However my album of last year was definitely Robert Plant Alison Krause “Raising Sands”.
And I really don’t get it that Bruce Springsteen’s “The Wrestler” is not even nominated. But that’s the OSCAR’s…..though I’m very, very happy (since I bursted out in tears….really….that’s not a thing I easily do you see…) I can watch the show Sunday in the middle of the night, they’d fixed it for me!! Poor neighbours…
Kpriss, since you never watch tv are you going to watch the show or just the red-carpet arrivals?

Anyway, again this is great Friday Break!

I was just thrilled to hear strains of this song during the film – it’s a great fit. And M.I.A. is a dynamo! I heard she had her baby HOURS after her Grammy performance.

As a sidenote: THANKS for your sweet comment today, beautiful. I appreciate it … just had to turn off comments to that one for personal reasons. ;)

Nice tune. I saw photos of her in that dress perfoming at the Grammys and I have to say I was worried that she was going to drop her baby right on the stage.
