I’ve been on a fashion magazines hiatus for too long as now I’m trying to make up for the lack of covers and advertising pictorials talk with yet another story revolving around the printed glam press.
This time I’m keen on showing that real women can be cover or marketing materials just as well (or even better) than professional models can. Of course, as far as fashion is concerned, ‘real’ translates with silver screen most of the times! Especially when the 2014 Awards Season is officially started (the 2014 People’s Choice Awards just happened – back to that later, though!)
{1} Penelope Cruz Ads for Loewe Spring Summer 2014
between the Spanish actress and the Spanish fashion house, there’s an ongoing love story that keeps on growing stronger each season. The Spring Summer 2014 campaign marks the third times they reunite to highlight the fashion qualities of both parties involved.
Photographed again by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot and benefiting from their mandatory cure of filtering and processing, Penelope appears wrinkle free, with a skin smoother than the proverbial baby’s cheeks. Sadly, the filters were also applied to Loewe’s leather goods highlighted in the campaign…

Should they not present themselves as smooth upon closer inspection, do not blame the fashion brand producing them but the processing of the advertorial photography…
{2} Eva Longoria Maxim’s Woman of the Year
the mignonne Spanish actress was photographed by Randall Slavin for the men Magazine Maxim as the crowned queen of their Maxim’s Hot 100. A position she had previously held in 2005 and 2006, back in her ‘Desperate Housewives’ years.
Eva is now a California State University graduate in Chicano Studies (besides her Bachelor Science degree in Kinesiology) and mainly voices characters for TV shows (The Simpsons, Mother Up!) rather than actually acting in them. The cover (and the associated pictorial) look simple and flattering, without special slimming measures performed on Randall Slavin’s photography.
{3} Cate Blanchett Vogue Australia February 2014
the dreamy cover girl gone terribly wrong. Too much tan, too much sharpening of the image got me wondering what went sideways with the editorial team greenlighting this cover!
I don’t think I’ve actually ever seen Cate looking that un-photogenic before. Even spontaneous paparazzi pics of her sans makeup, on a casual day out and about on mommy duty looks better than this supposedly glamorous picture in Gucci suit! Too bad for what it could’ve been one of the best covers of the 2014 fashion press debut.

{4} Amy Poehler Elle February 2014 ‘Women in TV’ cover
this is where the impending approach of the awards season starts to leave its imprint on anything and everything media. Amy Poehler is undoubtedly a charming woman but foremost an amazing comedian. And the world loves her madly for that tv-friendly quality innate in lovely Amy.

{5} Mindy Kaling Elle February 2014 ‘Women in TV’ cover
where would we be without Carter Smith’s annual awards Elle covers? Luckily for us, Elle’s fashion editors take us further than TV’s known paths. Mindy Kaling is one of the new generation’s mega talented know-it-all ladies and I sure love her uniqueness!
Remember when they said ‘The Mindy Project’ won’t make it beyond its trial season? Pfff!
{6} Zooey Deschanel Elle February 2014 ‘Women in TV’ cover
the New Girl? Nah! It’s Zooey! Everybody loves Zooey! Her quirky, geeky, girly style and her retro, cute, frilly outfits and her mismatched, mixed, artsy nails? Her pretty velvety voice singing in She&Him’s melodic duets or her inner digital expert pushing content via hellogiggles.com?
As a bonus, here are three young ladies in various fashion ad campaigns, starting with Miley Cyrus whose talent as an entertainer is doubled by her special gift for trouble making. Remember when she used to make waves with her Vanity Fair pictorial? Now she’s at it again with her ‘twerking’! I’m not convinced by her duck face in Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2014 ad campaign.
Photographed by David Sims and hinting to a noir atmosphere, Miley might’ve got us used to her moving, singing image more than we’re willing to accept her sitting still on a deserted beach. Interesting enough, she gets a glam photographer and not the usual Juergen Teller who was Marc’s favorite ad photographer…
See how: Miley started the ‘twerking’ controversy!
The ultra talented Elle Fanning fronting Miu Miu’s Spring Summer 2014 ad campaign as photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. I saw the girl just the other day in ‘Likeness’, a short movie about eating disorders gone viral on youtube (you can watch it here) and I admit she’s growing considerably on me! This Miu Miu campaign is so suitable for her gifted, unique personality, I can only congratulate Miuccia Prada for the genius of casting Elle!
aaaand (drumroll please!) Kristen Stewart Balenciaga Rosabotanica Perfume ad campaign!
What? you thought it was over when Ghesquiere left the maison? Well, it’s not. Kristen’s fame and marketing grasp goes beyond the change of creative at the maison’s helm. Rosabotanica is Balenciaga’s second perfume represented by the young actress whose fame resulted from starring in the teen romance drama Twilight was only matched by her love life scandals.
Craig McDean photographed the young actress in yet another one of Balenciaga’s visions in Technicolor (I wonder what will happen to her contract with Balenciaga when her rumored Chanel advertorial deal kicks in).

It is like I have seen these covers over and over again. It is kind of boring and sad.
I do not want to see another Miley or KStew photo anymore!
I do like seeing Amy, Zooey and Mindy but I am really curious as to why Mindy’s cover is in black and white while all the others are in colour. Mindy’s seem washed out in comparison.
