When initiating a move, you’re forced to follow. Everyone’s waiting for your next step, everyone has the highest expectations.
Word of YSL Manifesto circulates for over few weeks now. Well here is the teaser, a so-called “making of” or “behind the scenes” of the Manifesto (along with pictures from the actual YSL Manifesto) that was distributed in selected locations.
What is YSL Manifesto, after all? It’s a booklet signed Stefano Pilati, first created in the fall-winter 07-08 campaign (and featuring Gisele Bundchen) and distributed during Fashion Week. Now we’re talking about 24 pages (printed on recycled paper) of campaign shot by Ines van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin featuring Kate Moss.
The 2008 YSL Manifesto was/will be distributed: London and Milan on February 23rd, Tokyo on February 24th, New York and Paris February 27th, Hong Kong April 19th.
Fashion de-focused. Now we’re looking at a controversial Kate Moss reflected in the mirror. I don’t want to talk you through the video, but you know I can’t help it, I have to speak my mind. (I can’t wait your opinions on this film!). She’s putting on some make up. Afterwards you’ve got glimpses of Kate. Kate looking down, Kate with sunglasses, Kate is more of an impression than a presence. The only moment you catch her eyes, is when she’s using mascara, again, in the mirror.
You’ve got a boutique. Kate in and out of the boutique. Touching it, kinda being there but not quite. Stairs… A man, a street. The clothes are no longer important. I wonder what Pilati wanted to make from this YSL Woman of the S/S 08. I don’t know if you’re familiar with, but this Manifesto reminds me of a movie I was unable to fully understand for a year. maybe two – Solaris (having nothing to do with George Clooney playing the leading male role, but with the message of the Soderbergh’s film).
This film is no longer about fashion. Is about statements and possessions. It’s about women and controversy. It’s about images, suggestions, words aside, about darkness and exposure.
Let me know what you thought of this YSL Manifesto teaser, I’m really curious about your opinions.

Can’t help it though I do admire Ines and Vinoodh a lot to think watching this clip: “Get the London look”.
and the Kate look also ;) (and why not a cigarette while we’re at it! It’s so fancy! :( I wish people would start thinking for themselves and not just because someone else is doing/saying/wearing a precise something that all the rest is supposed to follow)
kpriss, I’ve seen another pic with a cigarette! I’m sure! I’ve searched and searched to show it to you but alas I can’t find it anymore. Look at that gorgeous suit, I do adore it, but if you look good you can see there was a cigarette. Great retouching for fashion lovers and anti-smokers outside France?
Couldn’t find any other picture with a cigarette, but I’d be more than happy to do an update if you locate it!
The suit is marvelous indeed as for retouching the picture it seems pointless. It’s as clear as daylight that she has a cigarette in her hand. Why doing a photoshop job and erase just the cigarette? Because there are laws forbidding cigarette exposure in advertising? I find it offending because smoking just isn’t fashionable. Is sick, downright.
[…] like the Manifesto. Anyway, things are getting back to old school for the big fashion house. Spring Summer Manifesto with Kate Moss, now Naomi. (the ads are shot in Paris, reportedly present times). Besides being a […]
kate moss is consistently glamorous (in her photo campaigns, that is), especially in this YSL shoot!
