It’s time for another Films Fashion episode! Much like many of you, we contributed to the box-office success of Captain America this weekend. An action-packed superheroes-packed movie inspired by the many Marvel characters. It’s the second movie about and around Captain America, this time introducing The Winter Soldier as well.
The good Cap is fighting with friends at his side (Fury, The Black Widow and The Falcon) and he gets to save the world. Again. But doing so, requires not only special training (didn’t you notice that all those who save the world are proficient in some kind of martial arts?) but also special costumes. Judianna Makovsky is the head of Costumes department for Captain America, The Winter Soldier.
She also did the costumes for The Hunger Games, XMen (The Last Stand), Harry Potter and The Devil’s Advocate, to name just a few. But while the super costumes our favorite superheroes wear upon entering battle (which happens usually at the beginning and in the second half of the film), there are scenes of delightful wardrobe normalcy when they wear clothes just like every one of us. So if we can’t walk in the Cap’s shoes all the time, we can always try Steve Roger’s shoes! And if we can’t kick like The Black Widow in her boots, maybe Natasha Romanoff’s footwear might be a nice a addition to our every day wardrobe!
What if I would tell you that you may already have those shoes in your possession? Firstly because the movie, although released in 2014, it was filmed in 2013, so whatever they wear, it’s already last season (by the ruthless standards of fashion seasons, of course) and secondly because we’re talking about Nike and Supra! Pretty much the average footwear for daily runs.

The Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff / Scarlett Johansson is wearing a lovely pair of black suede wedge Nike Sneakers. We talked about these sneakers before, so now it’s just a reminder that the $120 Nike Dunk Sky Hi are stars favorite urban footwear as well! The version worn by Scarlett in the movie (you can see her wearing them in their ‘fugitive’ part of the action) has pink laces and white midsoles and it’s called ‘Nike Dunk Sky Hi Essential’.
The concealed 2.6” wedges elevates the wearer at new heights of comfort and stability all in providing a reliable design since 1985 (when the first Nike Dunk were released) whereas the black suede leather upper offers a touch of elegance and style enhanced by the touch of feminine pink with the contrasting laces.
Natasha is also seen wearing a special necklace, throughout the Avengers 1.5 movie, as the new Captain America was dubbed. The jewelry comes from Tiffany, the Hearts collection: it’s a platinum chain with an Arrow Pendant, also in platinum (the ensemble costs $1,550). If you’re asking yourselves why she was wearing the necklace, then you haven’t paid attention to the first Avengers movie where the Black Widow and Hawkeye seem to have a really special relationship (read ‘madly, deeply in love’) and Natasha is wearing the arrow pendant as a reminder of her love for Clint (Barton, aka Hawkeye).
Captain America / Steve Rogers / Chris Evans is wearing a pair of Supra Vaider ‘Satellite’ high top sneakers during the superheroes promenade at the Mall (wink). The $105 Satellites have grey upper with turquoise back accents and padded turquoise mesh lining (but sadly are no longer available in the official collection this year, at least not in Steve Roger’s finish).
I’m certain you noticed that the Cap was in disguise for the ‘hacking’ (wink) occasion, wearing a pair of geeky eyeglasses from Paul Smith. The eyeframes are called ‘Paul Smith Campbell’ in gradient grey and are not part of the current collection and you can eventually find them online for appx $300.
Later in the movie, for an episode of outdoor exercise with The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers is seen wearing a pair of grey Nike sneakers. They’re the $160 Nike Lunarglide 5 iD customized with Nike’s special option NikeiD with grey lining and reflective shield diamond base and grey midsole topline.
The Falcon/ Sam Wilson / Anthony Mackie is the newcomer in Captain America’s team but a rather picky one as he’s seen wearing a pair of rare Yves Saint Laurent aviator-style sunglasses and a $480 Superdry Ryan leather jacket. At the beginning of the movie, when he ran into the Cap (literally), Steve Rogers was jogging in an Under Armour Armourvent $60 fitted grey short sleeve tshirt matching the grey $99 Under Armour Speedform Appollo running shoes!
Alexander Pierce / Robert Redford, a key character in the new Captain America movie, is wearing a pair of $340 Sheldrake RX eyeglasses from Oliver Peoples. The slick, classic brown tortoise gradient frames are inspired by Andy Warhol and are not available for online shopping.
I hope you enjoyed these finds just as much as I had fun turning the Internet upside down for two days and finding each and every one of them! As you know, I strongly dislike spoilers and thus I haven’t included any trailer, teaser or clip from the actual movie. However, most of the pictures I screen capped myself from the videos available online. The products images come from the brands websites and all others were made available through press releases as movie promos.
UPDATE: As many of you pointed out, the Under Armour Armourvent gray tshirt worn by Chris Evans in the Captain America TWS movie is not available anymore. This happened two days after I wrote my story so it’s safe to say that it was (one) an instant sellout or (two) a past collection in need of update.
No other website carries the tshirt in question so what I suggest – and Under Armor advises the same – try calling them at the number provided on their website. This way you can get an actual, real and dependable information about the Armourvent tshirt we’ve seen in TWS!
Another big question many of you sent emails to ask is who makes the blue biker jacket worn by Chris Evans / Steve Rogers / Captain America in the first third of the movie (the scenes below should be of some help in pointing out the exact moments when he was wearing the jacket). It’s a very light jacket, with biker details, made from breathable nylon and mesh panels. It’s entirely custom-made.
If you look closely, the same shade of blue used to create he biker jacket was also chosen for the Cap’s combat super-costume and also for the SHIELD uniforms. Judianna Makovsky spent quite a while choosing the right combination of fabrics that would look good and fit for the demanding HD screens. So here’s a part of her work as described in an interview:
‘I designed all new S.H.I.E.L.D. and Insight uniforms and had them manufactured.[…] One of my favorite garments to design was Steve’s motorcycle jacket. We wanted something that looked classic but modern at the same time and would take him out of the comfort zone of his WWII clothes.
The most difficult thing I had to achieve in this film was creating the fabric for the Captain America Stealth Suit.[…] So finding the right one became a trial. Then the printing ink would shine like plastic, which I disliked. It took four months of research and development to create a texture that seems so simple and was yet, so complicated.’
As requested, I did some researches about the clothes on the outfits seen on the Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff throughout the second installment of the Captain America franchise, The Winter Soldier. As it was to be expected, most of the items are either sold out or simply out of assortment due to the rapid changes in the fashion industry collections (seasonal, yearly changes since the movie was actually filmed, in 2013). Hopefully the names would provide some starting point should you want to search for the exact clothes!
Scarlett Johansson / The Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff wears the Gibson Military khaki jacket: a very urban, casual and versatile piece worn by Scarlett in the first part of the movie, through a series of key scenes between her and the Cap while out and about.
Scarlett Johansson / The Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff wears the Splendid Capetown Safari khaki hoodie jacket with striped lining. In a series of rather interesting key scenes between Natasha and Steve aka the Black Widow and Captain America, Scarlett Johansson is wearing another khaki jacket from Splendid (which is also sold out). A casual piece with a clever striped lining that would make you believe there’s a hoodie underneath a simple jacket when it’s actually a single item.
Scarlett Johansson / The Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff wears the Madewell belted leather bomber. During a handful of action – packed scenes, Natasha Romanoff is wearing (what else) a gorgeous leather jacket in a brown chocolate finish from Madewell. Perfectly distressed, the jacket seems to be a wonderful choice for the active scenes of the movie.
Scarlett Johansson / The Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff wears the Burberry London leather blazer in olive green. The only piece from Natasha Romanoff’s on-film wardrobe that’s still available, undoubtedly because it carries a price tag of $2,400, the leather blazer from Burberry London comes with a very elegant finish in both tailoring and leather texture. The color flatters Natasha’s redhead complexion and also looks more special than a simple black finish.
Anthony Mackie / Falcon / Sam Wilson wears the Humvee Field Watch in black. After thoroughly searching I was able to identify the watch worn by Sam Wilson aka Falcon in the Captain America: the Winter Soldier movie! It’s a Humvee Field Watch with black dial, (white) date display and black leather strap with wthite stitching! Although at the time of the movie release, Anthony Mackie had an advertising agreement with Montblanc, he was not wearing any of their timepieces in the scenes from TWS Captain America! (these are the images I screen-capped myself, trying to identify the timepiece)
