Elle Canada July 2011 Herieth Paul And The Move Over Dilemma

Let’s focus on the cover, first! It’s one of the rare, beautiful sights of a black model on a magazine cover! Yay for that! Elle Canada’s July 2011 issue puts gorgeous Herieth Paul to fight a battle that is not legit or moral. Models are not supposed to fight each other, nor are they censed to retire just because a younger face joins their agency (or another) (see the cover tagline, at left).

Herieth Paul as photographed by John van der Schilden is perfect as she is, they needed not retouch her beyond (armpit) recognition. And my, oh my, does that “Move over Naomi” tagline sounds wrong? In so many ways, I barely scratched the surface with the above (not to mention the already famous Cadbury case…) What’s your take on the matter? (via)

I have this issue. And I have to say that I was very stoked to see Herith Paul on the cover! But yes that move over Naomi thing is a tad jank, as if there is only room for one Black model in the world! Or any model of colour! That part annoys me!

I hope that Ms. Paul does not get caught up in the media blitz of “Naomi move over”….as a women of the African Ark they both possess their own unique beauty. Naomi paved the way for Ms. Paul as well as so many others, so there is absolutely no need for the silly competitive media blitz. I wish both of the the very best.
