The tennis season is at its clay peak right now, with everyone who’s anyone in tennis gathering around Roland Garros. While the tennis matches can be spectacular and surprising (although up to this point, there weren’t any unexpected results in this year’s tournament’s first rounds), we can always keep an eye out for fashion on the court!
This edition of the French clay open brings something new to the game: fashionable ball boys & girls! All dressed up in Adidas Y3 back equipment with the emblematic three stripes in crisp white.

Yohji Yamamoto is collaborating with Adidas for a special designer sportswear under the Y-3 label for many years now and he’s not the only designer enlisted by the German label which is also famous for its designer collections with Stella McCartney (top 10 WTA tennis player Caroline Wozniacki is Stella McCartney for Adidas spokesperson) or even Pharrell. For 2015 Roland Garros tournament, the ball girls will be wearing an all-black ensemble with the Adidas and Y-3 logos and the Roland Garros insignia on the upper left side of the chest.
The complete outfit comes with equally black sports bra and tights and a pair of knee high socks with three white horizontal stripes. While the socks may appear weird in some angles, the outfit is tasteful and stylish – at such point that even the fashion population can praise what goes on the tennis court without making any actual tennis references…
We should not, under any circumstance, minimize the role and the importance of ball girls and boys! Their training and continuous focus help make this game faster, better, and sometimes fashionable! There was times like last year, when although their on-court equipment wasn’t the most stylish, a memorable bench moment took place between ATP No 1. Novak Djokovic and a ball boy, taking a rain break under the same umbrella.

Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 Adidas label is responsible for some of the players equipment as well, dressing the Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fabio Fognini for the men, as well as two of the ladies: Ana Ivanovic and Simona Halep. Listening to the designer himself describing the process is a very inspiring lesson of creativity and inspiration!
Along with the strong clothing aesthetic, a new design of the Adizero Adidas Clay shoes was de rigueur! Both players and ball girls&boys have been equipped with the same kind of footwear from Adidas Y-3. The collection includes a Roland Garros efigia – a very common strategic approach of branding World’s no. 1 clay tournament. Although the French Open has its own clothing label (Roland Garros), traditional sponsors and partners such as Adidas, Lacoste, Babolat, Swatch launch special limited edition collections available through the Roland Garros stores (online and on site).
While the style factor is unquestionably amped up, there’s no tennis tournament making the most of the ball girls like Madrid! Spain’s rising star-tournament is not only getting better and more high-profile with each passing year (it’s a young one, Mutua Madrid – only a decade old!), but its contribution to the tennis culture has become undeniable! Madrid puts the tennis ball girls on the map! On the fashion map!
Since the beginning, in the early 1920s, ball boys have been on the tennis courts since the world’s oldest tennis tournament, on Wimbledon’s green grass courts! For the past couple of years, however, Madrid started to change the face of these tennis volunteers by choosing and training models for the balls job! Dressed by L’Oreal, Pull & Bear or Hugo Boss, Madrid’s Tennis Tournament ball girls have raised the bar for the ball girls and boys uniforms.
This year, the Spanish brand Piel De Toro was responsible for the models uniforms – pink polos and blue and white polka dots shorts with knee high white socks. Fabulous attire for the fabulous girls who did a wonderful job at Mutua Madrid ATP Open! Sincere congratulations for the marketing team responsible for this contract!

Well.. looking forward to Wimbledon’s lawn then! Either way, Stanimal was simply out of this world in that RG final match against the Djoker! Better luck next time Nole, well done Stan the Man! – and what an amazing character – the way he encouraged and comforted Djokovic was unexpected and so amazing!
Today Rafa won against Tomic on the Stuttgart Mercedes Cup lawn court advancing to the semifinals against Monfils tomorrow!
