As you fully know (and try to cope with me) by now: I’m really not into trailers / spoilers! We love our movies firsthand and if you do too, I won’t spoil it for you! But I read so many news titles daily that it’s nearly impossible to avoid bits and pieces of information about the movies I want to see next.
Such is the case with Pixar’s new animated adventure this year: Brave! I’m looking forward to it, more so since I know it’s about an unusual Princess, Merida. A Brave Princess, on my own heart, also the first female – lead character in a Pixar movie so far!
June 22 – save the date! It’s when we’ll finally get to meet Merida, the Princess who is Brave before being pretty! But leave it to classic marketing to twist that with a simple advertorial message: “Merida’s Dress: Look pretty and be brave, too”. Oh, come on? Do we really need to put beauty first? Always? (thank you, Jezebel for scanning that Target catalog page! On a side note, Merida herself isn’t too fond of the blue dress as seen in the trailer after the jump!)

The ironic thing about this dress ad of their is that Merida does something to the dress so she can be herself. So it is not about being pretty.
This kind of promotion really annoys me. Girls have to be pretty first before being ANYTHING! Being pretty is fine but it should not be formost in a girl’s development and that is not where she should first find her worth per se.
Just jank!
But I am mos def going to see this film and I am going to take my two nephews with me. They like strong females, when the play Star Wars sometimes they argue over who gets to be Ahoska Tano! :)
We want women to be treated equally, yet we teach them to be pretty before anything else. How about honesty? Kindness, respect?
Simple, universal, shallow principles that are always pushed forward by the marketing industry to manipulate the potential buyers have become stronger than real values. :(
This movie reminds me of Tiana, a little bit – she was such a hard working, honest gal, she always kept focused and she cared so much about the people she loved & their happiness! She’s definitely my favorite princess so far and I hope Merida will join her!
I think that Merida will join Tiana as well.

I really like Tiana and Mulan and I know that I will love Merida, for her spirit is something that resonates with me.
I wish I had someone like her and Tiana and Mulan to look up to and ‘read and watch when I was little.
But then I did not do too badly for I had Wonder Woman and Pipi Longstocking as my favourite story role models/sheroes! : )
Ah, yes, I knew I left someone out! – Mulan! She’s such a spirited, courageous princess! Especially in such a traditionalist society!
