How was your week, my daahlings? Fashionably great, I hope! I know mine was, since I spent it with you!
Either way, I hope you’ll have the most amazing weekend yet and I also hope this little tune I chose for this week’s Friday Break will help you get into the right, happy mood! Ladies and gents, the great Nina Simone My Baby Just Cares For Me! Enjoy! (do hit the jump, you have no idea what’s waiting for you!)
Though it’s not Nina Simone’s original piece, My Baby Just Cares For Me has become her signature tune. And I don’t hear a soul out there complaining about it! First included on Nina’s debut album (Little Girl Blue, 1958), this classic jazz song was written by Walter Donaldson with lyrics by Gus Kahn for the 1930 musical Whoopee!
However, it wasn’t until 1987 that it has become popular due to a Chanel ad campaign for the legendary Chanel no 5 perfume. The ad features French Actress Carole Bouquet and it goes like this:
I’ll hold on to the moral horses right now and won’t let them ride in sight. After all, it’s because of this controversial ad that the tune has reached its peak in popularity! Now to end it all in on a happy note, here’s Edward Norton and Natasha Lyonne in Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You (singing and dancing in a Harry Winston boutique). How lovely!

I’m counting Kpriss, 13 almost 12 days to go…..can be shorter, can be longer. Baby’s come when they are ready. Thanks for all your work. You’re awesome!!! Mwah!!! =))
Anyways, you’ve ‘your baby that cares for you’, very beautiful song, great performance. Nina Simone is a legend. The year 1987 is a special year in my life. I got my first Chanel 5 perfume as a present by a nice guy who found this commercial hilarious and didn’t get it. Neither did I but I loved the perfume and the memory. I love to care for Edward Norton by the way….;)
To all a great new week and keep on smiling.
Especially all best wishes to you Kpriss, go girl!
(P.S. Just noticed “The Birdcage” is on tv, with rain outside and warmth inside, I’m gonna smile a bit more on a late Saturday afternoon…..)
Oops…….
I love this tune and I adore Nina Simone she is one of my sheroes!
The Chanel commercial was always one of my all time favourite ads, it is timeless. :)
If you are my vintage you’ll remember Nina Simone singing on Sesame Street way back when! As a 6 year old I was entralled.
Thanks for the memory.
Ps. I didn’t know who she was at the time – now whenever I hear her voice I have memories of how awe struck I was as a child.
