Using a paps photo for a magazine cover is not that hard to believe when talking about tabloids. But Harper’s Bazaar’s July 2009 cover girl is Angelina Jolie and no, she didn’t pose for it!
Shamefully profiting from Angelina’s continuing fame and sells raising self, Harper’s Bazaar took a picture (an old one too – a Red Carpet picture of Angelina at the Benjamin Button premiere from December 2008) of hers and made a splashingly boring summer cover out of it. Is that because Angelina is too busy to pose for Harper’s or…? (the story continues with more pictures right after the jump)
Luckily there’s a subscribers cover to this issue. And the subcover is far more interesting and beautiful than this paps Angelina main cover. Covering the subscribers cover, for connaisseurs only, Doutzen Kroes! Is this the beginning of a new covers era? A Getty Cover for Harper’s Bazaar! We all know and hate how the economy crunch has its hands all over, but should we not take a stand before maghappennings like this one, soon everything will fall to pieces. Every bit of our treasured magazine love and photography amazement slowly and steadily falling pray to King Profit.
On the other hand, this could be the very sum of our current reality. Paps photography can be taken for art. Contemporary, unretouched, unstaged and unprepared. A snap and you’ve made the cover! Million of worldwide Internet users would not feel offended by a cover like this one. It’s like a supreme confirmation that paps photography will prevail in a world of shallowness and reality-shows-hunger. Why should Harper’s Bazaar (or Vogue) be higher/smarter than the average taste? The Angelina cover has a tabloid feel to it. Even the topic headers are kind of tabloid. Maybe they were going for that effect and why they used a recycled photo of Angelina. The Doutzen subscribers’ cover looks like a fashion magazine cover. They both do what they are suppose to do.
Doutzen cover is real fashion. And I am so not buying this issue because that Angie cover. I do like her(in some sort of way) but I can’t just look at it and try to pick up not thinking that it’s Bazaar not tabloids.
That Angelina cover-story (more of a novel than anything else) is about men and women wanting Angelina’s life. How about consumers refusing to buy HB because of that Angelina cover? They could’ve spared some money for a photo shoot, it would have made a huge success out of this July HB! Fans or not, people love some fresh Angelina photo material!
I like the Doutzen Kroes cover so much better than the Angelina Jolie cover.I do not get the appeal of Angelina Jolie.I think of her as a homewrecker.
It’s a pity models are not allowed to smile. Doutzen has such a beautiful, sweet smile. Of course I prefer her cover.
Maybe Angelina’s cover is a paps photo but it is posed and staged. As always.
It’s almost unique that they’ve a model on their cover since the other ones I see here are maybe more like a fashion covers but it are all actresses…..
Sounds like I’m a Dutch chauvinist but I prefer Doutzen above them all.
