Through the wind and the rain, through sun scorching heat or mind freezing temperatures, our beloved celebrities must sit pretty on the Red Carpet. And so they do, every time, without fail, like they were actually inside this huge bubble where times stops, and weather stands still and friendly.
Some winners from tonight’s 2013 SAG Awards edition were predictable, not to mention well – deserved, some were not, but notably unrewarded until now (and with that I’m looking at Daniel Day Lewis’ flawless impersonation of Lincoln who was rumoredly a favorite this Awards Season). But until the awards show was properly up and running, the Red Carpet arrivals were making some favorites of their own.
Much like the previous awards shows, this event too was less spectacular than it could’ve been – wardrobe wise. But as we see, everyone is playing safe, mostly on the dark end of the colors specter. I was a little disappointed by Morena Baccarin’s Basil and Soda dress – but then again, Morena doesn’t always go for the safest choice either. Julie Bowen’s leather dress from Johanna Johson didn’t do justice to Julie’s slender silhouette.
While I loved Jane Lynch’s black dress, I couldn’t understand Jaimie Alexander’s too – draped black dress, Michelle Dockery’s cutout black dress or Sigourney Weaver’s too – ruffled in all the wrong edges dress.
I still have mixed feelings about Argo’s Clea DuVall’s black dress… Oh, and although really flawless and timeless, 2013 SAG Awards winner’s Tina Fey’s Oscar de la Renta black dress was really plane safe.
I loved Julianna Marguilies’ black and white dress and her retro hairdo, however, January Jones’ Prabal Gurung black dress with white front panel wasn’t my favorite tonight. I do have a ‘favorite’ mention, though: Homeland’s Morgan Saylor’s black dress! Loved it! It really changes her usual Homeland teen – ish look!
At the other end of the specter, the very lovely Kerry Washington was dressed in a white Rodarte dress. Absolutely flawless. Not the same could’ve been said about Sofia Vergara who also opted for a white dress signed by Donna Karan. It’s not her usual mermaid – ish design and certainly not her usually revealing cleavage game. Sofia’s 2013 SAG Awards look took me by surprise. But not in a good way. Naomi Watts was also wearing a lightshades dress, from Marchesa and she looked every inch her usual gorgeous self.
Some brave girls, however, chose jewel – toned dresses and, for the most part, their choices were really inspired as they stood a part in a sea of dark – ish gowns. Hereby I included Nicole Kidman, who although dressed in deep blue dress from Vivienne Westwood Couture, looked more glamorous than usual with her deep dramatic leg slit and sequined floral appliqué.
Viola Davis’ Monique Lhuillier teal dress was really lovely, while Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris who, aside of her jewel toned dress, was wearing the 2013 SAG Awards most impressive hairdo.
Freida Pinto was all lovely – girly in a pink Roland Mouret dress, a shade really similar to Lea Michele’s Valentino pink dress. Wrapping up the pink ladies: Nina Dobrev chose a maxi pink dress from Elie Saab.
Jessica Chastain wore yet another red dress, this time from Alexander McQueen. The same vibrant shade of red was also worn by Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco. However, the Romona Keveza red lace dress she was wearing wasn’t nearly as worse as Kaley’s weird hairdo.
A special mention for Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland’s Dolce & Gabbana purple lace dress – I found it to be more interesting & fitting than her usual dress choices. Not the same can be said about her co – star, Ariel Winter. But then again, Ariel rarely chooses her Red Carpet dresses well. Her Alex Perry light peach dress was – although not entirely ill fitting, a bit odd on Ariel. The same goes for Jane Krakowski’s KaufmanFranco dress – too salmon-y for her complexion.
And what happened with Homeland’s Zuleikha Robinson’s printed dress? Looks like a watercolors game gone rogue! Same goes for Rose Byrne’s Valentino dress – she looked like a museum painting. But nothing beats Ellie Kemper’s washed out mint dress – it wasn’t flattering lovely Ellie!
Mayim Bialik’s electric blue lace dress looked lovely on Mayim, much like another blue dress was gracefully worn by yet another lovely lady: Jordin Sparks. Oh, and have you seen the prettiest flying squirrel around? Gabrielle Douglas was all sparkling in a mini blue dress with matching sparkling light blue shoes. Amanda Seyfried was stunning in her blue dress, although a bit too safe for my taste.
Busy Phillips showed her pregnant silhouette in a very figure embracing deep blue dress (can you believe she was wearing McQueen?) and Gretchen Mol’s ill fitting green dress was clearly not a good choice.
Not many sequins tonight, thought! Although both lovely ladies who chose to wear precious dresses looked ravishing and resplendissant! Jennifer Garner’s golden Oscar de la Renta dress was one of my favorite of the night. Helen Hunt’s silver sequined Romona Keveza was just as pretty as the lady who was wearing it!
Now: we’ve seen the dresses, but have you noticed the Red Carpet nails? I signaled Anne Hathaway’s butterfly nails earlier, but did you know that Kelly Osbourne was also wearing a special kind of nails tonight? Kelly Osbourne’s 2013 SAG Awards nails involved some pointy black heart shaped tips, matching her black Jenny Packham dress.
Busy Philips glamed up her beige nails with golden jewels while Sarah Hyland had some rhinestones appliqués on each of her transparent nails. Matching her red dress with equally red nails, Kaley Cuoco’s special heart shaped nailart could only indicate the imminent arrival of Valentine’s Day.
I’m sure there were more, interesting and pretty dresses and fashion highlights on the Red Carpet tonight. Anyone you noticed in particular?
Oh, and just a friendly reminder that Abu Nazir is safe and sound, buddying up with Brody right under everybody’s noses, on the Red Carpet! (wink) (images Getty)
