It suddenly came to me, that with everything that went down the other week (you know I was saying something about a certain day being special?), I forgot to share my current musical obsession!
And it’s actually not just my obsession! Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know is in many ways the musical revelation of this second half of 2011. Suffice to say it has reached over 12 Million hits on Youtube in just 3 months! And that should really mean something, although coming from the indie scene and breaking through Australia and Europe mostly. Without further ado, here’s Gotye and Kimbra Somebody That I Used To Know:
Gotye is the stage name of Wouter De Backer, an Australian singer (writer and composer) who was born in Belgium. Somebody that I used to know is sung with New Zealand singer Kimbra and has been received with accolades both by the critics and the public alike. Especially in Australia, the song is atop of the charts for eight weeks already (for comparison purposes only, in 1997, Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply has had a similar longevity at number one in the charts).
Although you may be tempted to believe that this is Gotye’s debut single / album, it is not. It’s Gotye’s third studio album! If the first two were somewhat experimental, this third one, and particularly this song, brought Gotye’s music in the spotlight practically over night. Although he admitted having been inspired by the likes of Depeche Mode and Kate Bush, I see a certain resemblance to Peter Gabriel. Which is great, in my opinion, as Peter Gabriel is a very, very talented artist. Did you see the similarity too? (you can find out more about Gotye here, about the StIUtK single here; the official website here)
