As I’ve made no secret about it, Alek Wek is truly an enchanted sight for me. Thus the news of her gracing the cover of Elle Africa April 2010 is pretty significant to my ears.
Being an important issue, the one marking Elle Africa’s 14th anniversary, it only doubles the joy of seeing Alek’s amazing beauty on a magazine cover. What about that cover-question: do black covers sell? (and if they do, why can’t we have the pleasure of seeing black covers more often? And if not… well, obviously – why not?) (photo via)

What a cheerful looking cover this is. Of course “black sells”. Why not? Or am I a “deaf, dumb and blind kid”?
This is a fabu cover and not just because the stellar Alek Wek graces it!
Yes Black covers can and do sell but what stops us from seeing them more often is racism and lack of conviction. And that is my story and I am sticking to it!
I myself would love to have this issue. I will mos def have to check my bookstore’s international fashion magazine section for it!
Alek is a great model who unfortunately is from the era when supermodels didn’t rule fashion magazines. She along with a few others since 1998 have missed out on covers that should have rightfully been theirs.
I think Alek had an ELLE cover in the late 90s & maybe iD.
I don’t think she’s beautiful at all. Her legs are gorgeous but that’s about as majestic as she gets for me.
She is stunning.
Thanks for posting this. I shall be linking back to my site.
She is absolutely gorgeous.
stunning black beauty..like an african statue. More black girls, pleaaaaaaaaaaase…
any model cover is a plus in my book. I am a total model fan
but realisticly probably wouldn’t sell as well as say Claudia Schiffer in my country….just sayin’
Sad to read this cover doesn’t sell. A male friend of mine has returned from a trip to China. (I’m so envious…..) Anyway, he was pleasantly surprised by the many beautiful people he met. As well male as female. Their natural style and elegance moved him. He himself is original Greek. Isn’t it strange that as well Chinese as Black covers doesn’t sell while these people are around on our globe as a majority?
Well it’s just a hallmark of the rich West which dominates international media. The West prioritises caucasian beauty.
Yes, we know that it’s the reason I shall never stop to speak up until it change. Even if I feel like a Donna Quichotte most of the time!
Keep on saying what needs to be said and heard Adriana!
I am with you on that front all the way! : )
