Le Calendrier Vogue 2009

I usually like Pin Up pictures. There’s something playful and superficial but at the same time intangible about pin up girls.

The legendary Vogue Calendrier, shot by Terry Richardson looks strange to me. Stranger than the January Issue that’s accompanying. Beautiful girls looking very anonymously. There’s almost nothing in those pictures that brings them a step further from a cheap advertisement. Looking tacky and lifeless to me, this calendar doesn’t have more than four pictures I could like: Anna J’s Avril, Erin’s June, Hanne’s February and Taryn’s Mars. Other than that, you can also find Jourdan with a slim syringe or Arlenis with a huge glass between her legs, not to forget Liu’s bizarre makeup and her strange eyes pose. Sometimes clichés are welcomed. And that cat-cover is so overrated and so circulated, I’m glad it’s only a cover and it doesn’t get to stay on for a month. But do tell me which one’s your favorite and how is this Vogue Calendrier from your point of view! (click thumbnails to see larger images) (photos via tfs)

UPDATE: I added a collection of pictures with Bettie Page, one of the original pin-up girls. Spot the difference…. (the last thumbnail)

I’ve seen this calender before. And like you I find it tacky and lifeless. And so cliché.
I wishes another Alberto Vargas stood up but I guess he was the big one….

I’d only regonise Jourdan Dunn. Well, I’ve seen these beauty much nicer and more sexy than like this.
And I prefer Susan Sarandon in the same pose as ??? in the cute red outfit. Hmm, on a second thougt, I like this one the most.

Lawd have mercy! These girls are skinny!
Too skinny for me to think of as pin ups!
I have heard some sad news though.
One of the best and original pinups, Bettie Page, is very ill and suffered a heart attack and is now in a coma. She is 85 years and she was one of the best pinups ever!
I can see where Dita got her style from when I see photos of Bettie in her heyday.
Just wanted to say this so we can send her positive thoughts at this time.
Oh and Kpriss if folks don’t know who the fabu Ms Bettie Page is maybe you could post a photo of her so they can see how great a pinup she was? Puts all these girls to shame and makes them look like ersatz pinups.

Betty Page was the Original Pin Up to me. There’s also Betty Grable but that’s another story linked to American GIs.
I find these Vogue pin ups boring and as Ellington said these girls are skinny and have no curves which are perequisite for any real Pin Up! They sure needed those Wonderbras.

Betty Page, THE Betty Page has a permanent place on my pinboard since years. That’s how much I admire her.
It is a honorable age, 85 years old. We are mortal…..and so is the lovely Betty…..

There’s so much to find on YouTube about the one and only Betty Page, a real woman, a lovely and fun woman too.
Bless Dita von Teese for showing the world these days how gorgeous a woman can be…

As for the skinny girls on this calender, this is Vogue and Vogue is fashion, fashion means skinny minnies……alas…..

I just read that Betty Page is critically ill in hospital. She’s 85 and suffered a heart attack. Her family and friends are said to be extremely worried. Get well soon Betty!

Dolly, I’ve read that too but the source I’d read said she’s in a coma.

Hey ladies! I mention about Bettie Page’s grave condition in my previous comment. Didn’t you read what I wrote?
On a happier note, THE FISH ARE BACK!!! HUZZAH!!! : )

Yep I overlooked the details you gave about Betty Ellington!
I think KL’s calender that followed that Paris calender subject got me confused and I think I should slow down with reading too many blogs. Didn’t mean to pull the rug from under you Ells! Hoipe you and the family had a nice weekend!

Ellington, you’re right. Well, in real life, my life, someone had a heart attack and died instantly. I guess I only have read “heart attack”….I’m very confused and sad…..altho virtual I’m human and so are you girls and I know this is not the place to write such a personal thing….sigh….

I’m glad you like the fish! ;) I even had the kids asking where they went because they love seeing them too!

I added some pictures with BettyBettie Page (I haven’t monitored her health lately. Is she in a better condition now?).

Not only I (too) prefer Karl’s calender for 2009, but as far as latest pin-ups concerned, I’m going for the Hollywood version with Susan Sarandon &co!

Thanks Kpriss for adding the photos of Bettie Page.
They are rather timeless looking photos in away and she makes the Vogue girls look lame and sad.
I have not heard if her dire condition has changed or not, but I am hoping and praying for the best for her. She is a very interesting woman.

Hi Ellington, I’ve some of these photos on my pinboard and a book too. I’ve “entertained” myself on YouTube with Bettie last weekend, you’re right its Bettie not Betty….I found her so cute, sweet with that naughty innocence…adoreable..
I found out we share the same birthday though with a lot off years in between.
Bettie is still an inspiration these days. I saw Monica Belucci on the cover of December Vogue Espana with Bettie’s trademark hairdo.

I guess you all have heard the news by now.

Farewell Bettie Mae Page may you rest in peace.
