The ink hasn’t properly dried on Twilight’s last installment movie posters and here we are, talking about another movie based on a Stephanie Meyer novel: The Host. I normally wouldn’t have dug into it, being another tween-ish story about love & other teen / tween issues, but I saw the posters.
And they featured Saoirse Ronan. And Diane Kruger. How could I just walk by without inquiring a bit? And guess who else is involved? Erin Benach – sounds familiar? It’s the same Costume Designer who was responsible for Drive (remember Ryan Gosling’s Drive jacket we talked about?). (click through for the goodies!)
So given that I wasn’t aware of the subject or the characters (I wasn’t the least familiar with Stephanie Meyer’s The Host novel), I had to do a little cautious research, careful not to reveal too much and be a spoiler but also trying to pick up the costumes thread… The movie, however, which is set for release in the second half of March 2013, is surrounded by an aura of mystery and unknown.
Which is normally de rigueur for sci – fi movies. Except this one is based on a previously released book, so the producers (maybe) thought that keeping things under wraps could bring more people into the theaters? Anyway, here’s what I think you should know and won’t spoil the movie – going charm either. Diane Kruger plays a ‘Seeker’, an alien, basically. And she’s always perfectly dressed, perfectly coiffed, wearing white clothes and driving silver chromed vehicles. As she was my main interest, I pretty much decided to leave Saoirse Ronan in the shadow.
Saoirse is playing Melanie / Wanderer in the movie. Don’t ask, I don’t really know what ‘Wanderer’ is. But I do know this much : the action is taking place in some desert – ish set. The clothes they chose for the characters aren’t too slick or couture – ish. Except for Diane’s, whose costumes need to be spectacular as she’s representing an Alien race. The other characters needed a vintage – polish. Something that would continue the idea that the human race is far from being fashion oriented but more like striving to survive. In the given circumstances, clothes fall behind. Not for Aliens, though (wink).
Now that’s my Host spoiler – free approach: what do you know about The Host? Have you read the book? Watched the movie news closely? Are you even remotely interested about this new movie? (oh, I have so many questions, I’ll just stop here, develop in the comments section if you’re in the mood for some movie – chatting). I’m clearly excited about Erin Benach‘s involvement in the movie’s costumes, I’m sure she’ll do a wonderful job, as usual!
