I was curious to see how they’ll decline the seventies under the Burberry Prorsum key. I wasn’t expecting such cutback on details and fabric layering. The Spring Summer 2011 collection from Burberry’s Christopher Bailey was very urban, young and quite simple.
Reminiscent details from last seasons hits (multi layered mini dresses) came forth again in neutral tons of peachy, buttery and plum, edged up by the leather jackets. Leather is the new trench right now at Burberry.
There’s little conformity to the seventies coziness and more edgy and sf tailoring. Silver leather trenches? A bit too glitzy for my taste, but I guess it’ll make a bestseller comme d’habitude. The biggest stars of the presentation were the metal studded leather jackets, hedgehog-ish spawning of the designer’s imagination. It’s a risky combination of short, body hugging leather jackets and zipper exposed leather skinny pants with quilted details here and there.
But then again, the Burberry loving youth, as targeted by Christopher Bailey in his latest ad campaigns will go towards this collection like moths towards the flame, getting burned by the new trends as reinterpreted by Burberry. Oh, and have you noticed the snake skin dresses and jackets? I wish I was as impressed by this collection as I was by their latest. But no. I’m not. It will sell, I’m sure, like anything else Burberry. However, design wise, I’m unimpressed by the new young urban cool as promoted by the British label. Let’s say you would have the necessary physical configuration to pull these off – would you wear Burberry for your next summer season? (you can see images from the entire collection here)
