As I’ve mentioned it before, I’m an avid tennis fan and every now and then, I’ll present you with a tennis story to remember. Today it’s about a curiosity spotted on the clay courts of Monaco (Europe) earlier today.
Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were seen courtside at the Rolex Open in Monaco wearing each a pair of black tennis shoes, which was not announced as part of their gear for the season. More so: both players had some numbers written on the side of their Nike black tennis shoes – what’s that all about? (scroll down for the answer!)
4.13.16. It’s a day. Actually, the format is M.D.Y. So the month is April, the day is 13th and the year 2016. What could that day – today – mean to both Federer and Nadal and to Nike? It may surprise you to read, but it’s actually not tennis related and there’s a serious chance you won’t be seeing these tennis shoes on the courts again (actually Roger Federer was seen wearing his usual Nike Vapor tennis shoes while training before the matches today, so it was only for his scheduled match).
Did you know that: Chanel makes tennis rackets and balls?
Today, April 13th 2016 is the last NBA match Kobe Bryant will ever play. Today, the great Kobe Bryant will retire and today’s match at the Staples Center will be his NBA swan song (against the Utah Jazz). He’s been a wizard on the basketball court since 1996 with the Los Angeles Lakers so it makes sense to have him celebrated at such a high level. Nike has always been with him, even through his troubled years, so there’s definitely a special relationship there!
Looking forward to see: The Tennis Season’s most fashionable ball girls and boys!
Nike loves his athletes and the this synergy created just through athletic gear is stunning, uniting two of the world’s most prestigious tennis players in a tribute for a wonderful player who enchanted us so many times over. Black Mamba’s legacy will live on!
