Miu Miu Women Tales: AvaDuVernay The Door Spring 2013 Film

I was really reluctant to try another Prada / Miu Miu fashion film. Everything so far, although highly fashionable, was a bit too fash – cryptic for me. And that was a bit disappointing since I still strongly believe that fashion is about fun before anything.

But our dearest friends (thank you, Ellington and Appollonia!) introduced me to the story and I was delighted to discover it, playing the 9 minutes of Ava DuVernay’s The Door short film for Miu Miu and then feeling I wanted more! (hit the jump to discover both The Door and a short behind the scenes clip as well!)

Miu Miu Ava DuVernay The Door

The Door is Miu Miu’s fifth Women’s Tale short film gravitating around feminine bonds. And it was meant to be this way! Me – keeping the distance and having my friends show it to me! Kinda like Gabrielle Union is surrounded by her friends in the short film and how they help her get through her rough patch! (and how amazing is that her mother is played by Alfre Woodard? Iconic!)

It a very human, sensitive and real story. That is if you count out the amazing house and the gorgeous wardrobe! Peel these ones out and you have a profoundly feminine, empathic core with real values and true sensitivity. I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, here are some facts to help you pinpoint the wonderful songs in the film’s soundtrack.

In the film, characters arrive at the door of a friend in need, bringing something of themselves,” explains director DuVernay. “Eventually, we witness our heroine ready to walk through the door on her own. The door in the film represents a pathway to who we are.”

Clothing is also a symbol of renewal, each change of costume charting our heroine’s emergence from a chrysalis of sadness.

Ava DuVernay was the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Prize at Sundance Film Festival, for her second feature, Middle of Nowhere, in 2012. The Door stars Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Adepero Oduye and singer-songwriter Goapele.

“Turn your lights on” – Performed by Emanative ft. Ahu. “Chameleon” (Applejac’s Sounds of Mecca Mix) – Performed by Dezaray Dawn. “Who flew and Beyond” – Written and Performed by P. Furey. “For love” – Written and Performed by Goapele. “Because” – Written and Performed by Ra-Re Valverde.

…..yes, I loved everything about it! It’s not often that a fashion film make sense to me. This one did. Really a splendid film.
So glad Alfre appeared in it. I miss her. I’m a long time fan of this great actress.

Thanks for adding the “behind the scenes” footage etc. Kpriss. :)

This was perfection. It almost moved me to tears… I wasnt expecting that a fashion move could touch me so much. Besides the story, everything is beautiful, even the shadows on the walls… I am amazed.
Thanks kpriss. Thanks Ellington. Thanks Appollonia.

aww! Fashion brings us together once more! Love it! Loved the short film, loved that it was so predestined to be shared and to be loved! We should try this more often! It’s therapeutic! (now if we could also get someone to bring us the Miu Miu wardrobe… lolz)
