$3 Million golden statue of Kate Moss by Marc Quinn. What a way to start a day! As a project for the British Museum’s “Statuephilia” exhibition, this golden Kate will be displayed from October 4 to January 25.
Marc Quinn’s obsession with Kate Moss isn’t something new. It already spawned a yoga-positioned Kate (she didn’t pose for that knotted-legged statue herself, in case you were already wondering…). He believes that La Moss is the spirit of the age itself and as such he decided to cast her in gold and honor her like a proper God(ess). An Egyptian one. Too bad the statue’s only hollow, like the person. What’s this golden Kate supposed to do? Honor her? Honor the models? Honor drug addiction and rock’n’roll life?
UPDATE: Here’s the glorious statue, revealed in all its skeletronic glory:

Well I suppose it could honour the artist’s ego and obsession. This is really a sad case of Art for Art’s sake.
I like Kate and she’s my forever Georgy Girl but her as a gold statue a la Goldfinger is hallucinating and even quite sad.
I like Kate as a model ,but I am not so sure as a work of art.
I think that the statue should have been made of chocolate and then it would have been at least delicious!
: )
Only if its very dark chocolate I would eat a piece off Kate! I’ve a bit of an OD (thats so rock’n’roll!) from this woman…..
This is indeed the amoral “let’s worship the Golden Calf/Moss” Age returning to humanity courtesy of our amoral ridiculously and illogically wealthy “elites.” Get ready for a lot more decadence and trouble ahead as our Western “holier than thou” empire begins its’ decline.
@MichaelP, I share this sentiment but since I’ve had many requests in real to stop my “dark thoughts” and stick to my fascination with the [rise and fall of the] Roman Empire I tried to react as neutral as I could……but this was my first thought….
why shouldn’t we honor rock n roll life? rock n roll makes the world go round. should we honor boring midwestern housewives instead? kate is an icon like it or not.
I don’t care if Kate Moss is an icon. Not to me. And she’s certainly not someone whose a honour to rock n’ roll! I’ve other examples in mind who deserves a golden statue for their impact on rock ‘n roll. Some are death and the ones I ‘ve in mind don’t want their statue in gold I think or hope……
And who knows what you miss with your prejudice against “boring midwestern housewives”……..
Way to tell it like it is Adriana! : )
Who are all of you to say what art is or what Kate Moss’ career is about, both people in question here are talented and have worked towards their current status. They are respected and paid for what they do and they have there own loves, desires and personal messgaes inspiring them to do so. These statues are provocative and inspiring everyone here to have their own opinions, so there thats one easy answer as to why he did it, its art like it or loathe it.
Quinn is a genius. Get a life…
Sure Quinn is a genius! He fooled greedy people with his art. That art soap bell has bursted though…..never heard about that? Credit crunch? Does that make bell rings?
is supposed to honour someone’s right to do whatever the hell they want with their lives, staue no staue, drugs no drugs, it is their actual prerogative, do not feel superior for a second there, and no I have never done drugs or been obsessed with models, am irrelevant.
This is in fact an homage to a statue deity known as the Fasting Budda (google image it!). Did anyone notice that she was in full lotus (where your legs are crossed like that) or that she was cast in bronze? This is a statue enshrining her glory in a religious way, just like the Golden Marilyn, by Warhol whereby her face was printed onto a gold surround similar to that of Byzantine religious art. She is depicted as a divine spirit who has fasted endlessly to achieve nirvana.
