It involves Zoe Saldana, one of my favorite actresses right now (and one of the most beautiful, might I add!) and Nina Simone, one of my favorite songbirds ever! (and one of the most troubled too) Rumor has it that Zoe is headed to “Nina”, the biopic movie about the one and only Nina Simone. Although I’m puzzled since imbd indicates Mary J. Honestly, why MJ Blidge was even an option? She is not an actor.

Beyonce is an acting disaster , as Rihana, as J-Lo,as Justin Timberland.
Actors are trained for that and YES some of them can actually sing really well and the opposite is not true.

No, no no! Don’t feel sorry! You know, I watched Mary J. Blige in Rock of Ages acting rather weird and pretty off – beat. Luckily for her (and for the movie’s overall impression), her character allowed her the “strangeness” being that she had a gentlemen – only business to run.
But your point is valid through and through: some singers can’t act decently. Except (maybe) in their own videos.
Personally, I think Mary J was an option because of the physical resemblance… In my mind, Nina Simone was hardly the waif Zoe is.

Agree though with Kpriss’ last sentence. But what about someone like Angela Bassett? She can do it. Ms Simone was quite a personality. Not that I doubt Zoe’s acting talents but I can’t see her pull of a Nina Simone to be honest. I love Mary as a singer and am a fan from scratch when Mary was hardly able to do a proper interview. I can not judge her acting skills since I never saw her act.
Aww, Diana Ross was great as Billy Holiday. And I never thought Marion Cotillard could be Edith Piaf but she did wonderful.
I read IMDb too and Zoe seems fully booked until 2015 and one fan complains on the discussion boards Angelina Jolie ‘stole’ the Cleopatra part? No news about that either?

ANGELA BASSET! but she did Tina Turner and perhaps was an obvious choice?? I wouldn´t care . I ADORE her and she is not doing much lately ( as far as I know).
Don´t get me wrong. I think MJ Blige is a superb singer. I like her immensely. And I also always loved Mariah Carey and Madonna( ok, she is not a great singer ). Now I ask: girlfriends, can they act ?? mmmm, NO!
Not everyone out there can do a Cher, or a Betty Middler, sorry.

ana, I realised that. Angela did a great job. I never had the pleasure to see Mariah act but from what I’ve heard that’s not too bad. There are so many great black actresses whom are capable I think. What about Lauryn Hill? She can act and sing and looks more like Nina Simone! There’s Alfre Woodward, Viola Davis or Vanessa Williams? Octavia Spencer and one of faves Sophie Okenedo. If they can sing of course. I bet there more women like them always in supporting roles while they deserve a strong lead part.
Or what about Erykah Badu?
Sorry if sounded rude.I meant “too obviuos” in her public relations/ manager´s eyes, because the fear of ” boxing” one in a specific kind of role. Not for me.. .at all. I wouldn´t mind the least.

You did not sound rude at all? You never do! I got what you meant and agree. If Angela would play Nina too it would look like typecasting. So I made a sort of list with real good actors who hopefully can sing and are able, in my opinion, to portray Nina Simone. Lauryn and Erykah can sing too. Lauryn can act as well.
You should check out the work of Erykah Badu. She’s wonderful and very special.
Well, time will tell who will play the part. It’s always a bit weird to see actors playing these music icons. Jamie Foxx was really great as Ray Charles. Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix did very well as June Carter and Johnny Cash. Thought no one can beat the real ones ever.
As for this part I think there’s no need for “ugly” up anyone. Nina was not ugly in my view.
IMDb just have this info “The story of the late jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone including her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson.” So it’s perhaps just as with Walk The Line (Cash/Carter) a brief, younger part of her life story.
Sorry, me again….I just read Blackvoices.com on FB and many people mentioned Lauryn Hill and also Erykah Badu.
Also Zoe Seldana was not slammed by anyone and I have not read doubts about Zoe’s acting abilities but the posters find her not suitable for the part.

No she wasn’t she just got older ;) I should apologise too. Because I did notice it but I read “ugly” and not plain ugly. I find it absurd and sometimes frightening that there are actors with great abilities whom are “ugly” and never ever stand a change to fulfill their dream. Certainly not women. That’s why they “ugly up” a beautiful woman like Charlize. That’s a plain fact truth!
I still stick to Mary J Blige. She looks a bit like a young(er) Nina and is a phenomenal singer. Well, I speak as a fan of both women :)
Actually, before Jennifer became J.Lo and still had her own nose she did play some real good parts. I am a critical film watcher and she was really good in U-Turn and Out of Sight.
