Chris Isaak Wicked Game

Helena Christensen in Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game video is one of those moments in music/modelling history that you just can’t ignore. It’s like Freedom 90! The world was simply never the same again.

Thanking you for this most amazing week together, for your great comments! I wish you have a wonderful, safe and peaceful weekend and for those of you taking the long weekend: Happy 4th of July already! Enjoy Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game! (more details about the song/video right after the jump!)

This is one of those unbelievably beautiful hopelessly timeless love songs. Helena Christensen’s Wicked Game is the reason I would ever wear chipped, black/dark lacquered nails! And that really says something!

Wicked Game was released in 1989 but never made it big into the charts until 1991 when it was featured on David Lynch’s Wild at Heart movie soundtrack. Though it was just an instrumental version of the song and the world wasn’t yet familiar with Helena Christensen rolling in the sand with bad boy Chris Isaak, the song made it to the sixth position in the Billboard Hot 100.

There’s another video for Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game. Directed by David Lynch himself, this very rare version also includes scenes from the movie (Wild at Heart). (In very poor quality, you can watch it here). But nothing compares to Helena’s topless performance. Cleverly filmed under Herb Ritts’ direction, the video raised some voices against Helena’s explicit attitude despite of the video actually not showing any relevant skin to censor.

At the time, Helena Christensen had just gained her supermodeldom spotlight. Named Miss Denmark when she was 18 (1986), she was 23-year old when she starred as Chris Isaak’s lover from Wicked Game. All her life, Helena has been associated with various rockers, rock band front men (she was INXS’ Michael Hutchence’s longtime girlfriend) so she was a very inspired choice for Wicked Game. This is a beautifully filmed video.
I have always liked the work of the late Herb Ritts, I also loved his filming of Janet Jackson’s “Love will never do without you” and Madonna’s “Cherish”.
Thanks for this Kpriss and have a lovely American holiday with your loved ones! :)

p.s. Helena Christensen looks stellar in this and so does Chris Isaak.

Young me saw Chris Isaak perform in Amsterdam’s Paradiso in October 1987. Just a few weeks after I saw Guns n’ Roses there. So different but both made a great impression on me until now. He did this song back then! Actually the Netherlands were the first country that embraced Chris Isaak’s music.
It’s one of the most beautiful songs and video clips ever made. This is a classic imo. Great choice. I begin to believe we could listen to a lot off music together Kpriss!
A fun anecdote, at least to me is that Metallica’s James Hetfield is a great Chris Isaak fan. His wife wanted to surprise James with a performance by Chris Isaak at their home at James’ birthday once. Chris was hide in their house and “The Mighty Het” was very impressed and also very shy when Chris came out off a closet to sing for him as the story goes.

I wish you and your family and all Americans a great 4rth of July.
(Though I always think of that movie….)
