The World’s First Gas Station Covered In Fabric

What to do with an abandoned gas station? Cover it up with a blanket, that sounds like the most reasonable idea, right?

Artist Jennifer Marsh gathered more than 2,500 students from 29 states and artists from 15 countries for this very special project: cover the 50 years old gas station and dependencies with more than 3,000 crocheted, knitted, stitched or quilted bits and pieces of fabric. (more pictures and a video after the jump)

The project took time, energy and money – $29,000 (Jennifer’s own funds) and several contributions. The NY Syracuse former abandoned gas station was enrolled in the Internatonal Fiber Collaborative’s fight “World Reclamation Art Project” trying to express the concern about important issues. And Jennifer’s on the move, locating other deserted gas station US and World-wide… Would you participate in such a project?(click thumbnails to see larger images)

I like it! Its fun, bright, whimsical and cheerful! It reminds me a bit of the artist Christo’s work.
