Browsing the elegant paths of the fashion interwebs the other day, I discovered an interesting piece about a cult fashion event: ‘Arrrgh! Monstes de Mode’ is a special kind of fashion exhibition hosted by the Benaki Museum in Athens(Greece).
The most unusual but very on-point exhibition was initiated by Vassilis Zidianakis and Angelos Tsourapas (both from Atopos CVC) and puts together all kinds of unusual fashion characters from no less than 55 fashion designers chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 creations from various names. Alexander McQueen and Martin Margiela are just two of the most notable creations labels presented. Next to those, new and upcoming young names can be admired as well: Craig Green, Hideki Seo.
Take this image below, taken by Michael Smits, a terrifying but oh-so-colorful creations by Manon Kundig from the MA collection Antwerp Fashion Department. It’s a twisted way of turning our fears into fashion and viceversa.
The exhibition is actually based on a book: ‘Not a Toy: Fashioning Radical Characters’, dealing with our obvious ever-growing need to express our feelings and imaginations in an obnoxious, foul, unusual way. Mr&Mrs Myth below are such a suitable pair for all the strange pairs in fashion nowadays. Be it as we see them or how they imagine themselves, the fashion distortion is now regarded as art. And this exhibition is like a contemporary Mirrors Room for our beloved fash-population.
