London’s mad hatter (for he truly is one, beyond any reasonable doubt) came with a giant head bow this year, appealing, I’m sure, for Lady Gaga (the giant orbital headpiece, anyone?) as for the golden manicure… yes, I do appreciate the grotesque of it all but I can’t say I appreciate the fashion of it. Made in collaboration with jewelry artist Lorenz Baumer, this new jewelry collection from Louis Vuitton calls upon the spirits of travelling, the phantoms of traveling memories, swearing upon the Monogram Luxury Lucky Star that this will be one of the most beautiful jewelry collections ever! The collection’s preciousness is hardly believable, it’s amazing how jewelry can look like these days! The artistic dimension of the pieces clearly outshines the classic jewelry mental projection. For some unknown reason (or maybe just sparks-affiliated reasons), every year, getting closer to Christmas also brings me closer to incredibly beautiful jewelry. And as much as I dislike the Louis Vuitton uber branding, I have to give in to the exquisiteness of this all. Wouldn’t you?

You know I like artsy fancy things. Under a smiling circumstance. I love everything I can smile about, feel good with / about. The Dried Fruits Rings and Necklaces by Cathy from La Prochaine Fois really stretches my face in a wrinkle – friendly smile! (the story continues with more images right after the jump!)

Besides being utterly remarkable as art object converted from simple, natural resources, these Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces have a terribly familiar air to them. When I was in high school, I used to make necklaces from apple seeds. Fresh, apple seeds in very long strands! (now you know the secret of my youth – I used to eat tons of apples when I was in high school! Joking! The only thing I [visibly] got from eating that much apple was the alarmingly increasing desire to banish the apple from my sight, my refrigerator and any kind of close-to-me storage for a very loooong time and a temporary mild stomach trouble). Getting back to the Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces: don’t they look lovely?

Cathy, who had this as dried jewelry thing as a school project since she’s an art student, thought of the variations offered to her by using these natural resources, so besides the raw dried fruits she used for the necklaces and rings, she chose to apply wax or lacquer on the fragile dried fruit / vegetables. While she’s still waiting to see how the natural raw dried fruits rings turn out with time passing, the thought of having altered the natural raw form for the necklaces isn’t quite fitting this time / memories project she’s been following all along.

As always, I’m impressed by how simple things can provide immense beauty, by the talent lying in the human mind and the endless possibilities offered by our immediate surroundings. That’s my kind of art. There’s nothing “pushed”, forced in these Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces. And making things last forever is working against us. We don’t last forever. Bringing jewelry pieces to a larger-than-life size and place them in various urban landscape situations is by far a pleasant and funny way to redecorate the concrete city. (the story continues right after the jump with more images!)

Part of her graduation project, this Urban Jewelry moment is ready to be admired in Belgium, on the streets of Tielrode (right next to the Netherlands border) as special announcement of a special exhibition: “What’s news”. The exhibition is, of course, about jewelry and various jewelry designers and it takes place until November 8, 2009 at the Sofie Lachaert galerie, Tielrode, Belgium. No word if the Urban Jewelry installation will still remain in position after the exhibition ends. Wouldn’t it be great if more artistic initiatives like this one would populate our concrete jungle?
