I was never fully prepared to accept Jared Leto’s musical adventure. I always thought he was a brilliant actor. Deranged, but very gifted. (don’t let me start the Requiem For A Dream pro-plea again!) Thus I haven’t had the pleasure of really listening 30 Seconds to Mars. This time, however, it’s different! Not only the tune has that engaging, fantastic, full of promises name, but the video? It reminded me so much of the Fisher King, I was instantly sold!

So who is 30 Seconds to Mars after all? (in very, very short:) It’s Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic. Though they started in 1998, their first album, 30 Seconds to Mars, came in 2002. Their second album, A Beautiful Life, was dropped in 2005 and was pretty acclaimed by the public and the critics. Their third album (subject to a contract infringement controversy with Virgin Records) will debut this very December 2009 and it’s called This Is War.

Kings + Queens is the debut single of 30STM’s third album and though it’s undeniable that the song calls for U2 heavy influences, it still remains beautifully epic. And that’s why I heart it. Also I do believe I needed something strong to round up this febrile week. How do you like it?

There’s something about this kind of music, something that always reminds me about Christmas. Maybe because I love listening to old Christmas carols around Christmas? That too, but above all, Judy Garland’s Embraceable You is a love song! The kind I love to love and love to dedicate to my adored Husband!

Embraceable You was composed in 1928 by the amazing George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin and originally performed by Ginger Rogers in 1930 (of course, in a dance routine with Fred Astaire). The version included here belongs to Judy Garland from the film Girl Crazy (1943), film made after the eponymous Broadway musical where the Embraceable You was first heard (the original orchestration can be listened here)

Those were the days! Have you noticed that wonderful headband on Judy’s head? And her hair? And how charming she was? (somebody stop me, I could go on till Christmas!)

Starting to gather material for this article, I discovered that the very composer of this brilliant tune died just recently (October 20, 2009), RIP Vic Mizzy! Even though the original TV series, “The Addams Family” go all the way back to 1964-66, I still want to watch the entire show without missing a beat!

Based upon the work of Charles Addams, the famous (American) cartoonist, the Addams family was imagined as the completely opposite of the ideal (American) family, even though the husband and wife, as a couple, they’re very much in love and as parents, they’re exemplary. Funny and witty, the entire household seems to live the semper happy childhood. There’s much to say about this TV series, but I’ll just stick with the main coordinates. (you can delight yourself with tons of trivia and information here and here)

John Astin and Carolyn Jones were unparalleled as Gomez and Morticia Addams and the “altogether ooky” family was deliciously dysfunctional, yet overwhelmingly perfect in their weirdness. The composer himself, Vic Mizzy was the voice of this legendary theme song (he overdubbed the voice three times). As for the unmistakably Addams fingers snapping – it was supervised by Mizzy himself, as he wanted all seven actors snapping in the rhythm. (Vic Mizzy later declared : “That’s why I’m living in Bel-Air: Two finger snaps and you live in Bel-Air.”)

Who’s Paolo Nutini and why is he relevant? Because he’s young, talented and he makes funny, happy music! Yes, it’s the typical young-no-worries, girls are pretty, the sun is up and all we have to do is party all life long, but indulge me in this Pencil Full of Lead likeness, you’ll see it’ll catch up with you!

22-year old Paolo is at his 2nd album, the first came out on the music scene in 2006 and registered amazing success both with the public and the critics. His second album comes three years later and this song featured here is the third single set to be released in November. Yes, this November! He confessed his first happy encounter with the music – at the early age of five, listening to The Drifters (When My Little Girl Is Smiling) he was just happy. I don’t know if he authentically recalls that himself as early memories are hardly this accurate, but for the love of the happy-story, let’s believe him. He dropped out of school (is that a Scots fashion? Since he’s the second Scotsman I write about having dropped school early to pursue his dreams) and here he is, living his dream, pretty successfully, I might add!

I always wondered what would be like to be born on Christmas Day! If something from the holy aura surrounding this special day would pass on any newborn on December 24th! Maybe Annie Lennox is the positive answer to that question: she was born on Christmas day, in Scotland, 1954. She joined the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK. But her artistic destiny lied elsewhere so she dropped out of that prestigious Academy where she was studying the flute and tried to follow her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter.

After years of band/duet singing, Annie broke solo in 1990 with her “Diva” album (1992). “Walking on broken glass” was on Diva. The video was especially theatrical, inspired and meant to reprise the atmosphere from Dangerous Liaison. The Sophie Muller directed video included John Malkovich and House’s Hugh Laurie (Annie herself said about the video:

“This was a wonderful video to create. There were some wonderful people involved– John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie (before he had an American accent)! That was tremendous fun. The idea of it being a period piece, like Les Liaisons Dangereux. The alternative title for ‘Broken Glass’ could easily have been ‘Hell hath no more fury than a woman scorned.’ The video is very wry and tongue-in-cheek. People can take me a little seriously sometimes, but I do actually have a rather radical sense of humor.”

This must be my blue week of the year! Just look at the songs I’ve put together for this Friday Break! Still, I think Lenny was greater back in the days! Back when he was rocking his Rasta looks. Come to think of it: his redundant love, faith themes, spiced with models – stuffed videos make me think Lenny too is stuck back in the days.

Yes he’s upbeat and he’s got that rocker style, we could even work him up for the Men of Style column. But there’s something about Lenny that just doesn’t feel right. Or maybe I’m just having issues with the entertainment industry… Nevertheless, the man makes some beautiful music!

Getting back to “If You Can’t Say No”: I believe you recognized Milla Jovovich playing Lenny’s glamorous, glitzy, futuristic girlfriend. Even if it all reminds me of the first Resident Evil movie, I try to get my mind off gloomy things and computer games and concentrate on soul and rock’n’roll. If You can’t Say No was included on Lenny’s 1998 album “5” and it won an award for Best Art Direction. Even though this song is more on the trip side of pop, Lenny remained true to his sound and he still represents as a rock artist. Here comes another good ol’ Lenny with “Can’t get you off my mind” and right after, a James Brown-ish Lenny doing his thing with Diddy and Pharell in “Show me your soul”!
