London’s mad hatter (for he truly is one, beyond any reasonable doubt) came with a giant head bow this year, appealing, I’m sure, for Lady Gaga (the giant orbital headpiece, anyone?) as for the golden manicure… yes, I do appreciate the grotesque of it all but I can’t say I appreciate the fashion of it. You know I like artsy fancy things. Under a smiling circumstance. I love everything I can smile about, feel good with / about. The Dried Fruits Rings and Necklaces by Cathy from La Prochaine Fois really stretches my face in a wrinkle – friendly smile! (the story continues with more images right after the jump!)

Besides being utterly remarkable as art object converted from simple, natural resources, these Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces have a terribly familiar air to them. When I was in high school, I used to make necklaces from apple seeds. Fresh, apple seeds in very long strands! (now you know the secret of my youth – I used to eat tons of apples when I was in high school! Joking! The only thing I [visibly] got from eating that much apple was the alarmingly increasing desire to banish the apple from my sight, my refrigerator and any kind of close-to-me storage for a very loooong time and a temporary mild stomach trouble). Getting back to the Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces: don’t they look lovely?

Cathy, who had this as dried jewelry thing as a school project since she’s an art student, thought of the variations offered to her by using these natural resources, so besides the raw dried fruits she used for the necklaces and rings, she chose to apply wax or lacquer on the fragile dried fruit / vegetables. While she’s still waiting to see how the natural raw dried fruits rings turn out with time passing, the thought of having altered the natural raw form for the necklaces isn’t quite fitting this time / memories project she’s been following all along.

As always, I’m impressed by how simple things can provide immense beauty, by the talent lying in the human mind and the endless possibilities offered by our immediate surroundings. That’s my kind of art. There’s nothing “pushed”, forced in these Dried Fruits Jewelry pieces. And making things last forever is working against us. We don’t last forever. It’s a perfect match for a punk rock attitude, the trendiest one around, so don’t be surprised if Valerie Rubinaccio’s jewelry will be soon spotted on the likes of Agyness and Alice Dellal. Not exactly looking to follow a certain pattern, the chain rings are a subtle cultural reminder of the slave bracelets (fictionally attributed to slaves and most currently associated with harem dancers and gothic cultures).

It’s actually a smart initiative from a streetwise brand called Freshjive. In an effort to create fashion and make it wearable just for the good fashion reasons, Rick Klotz, designer and owner of Freshjive (and RMK, Warriors of Radness) tries to take off the tribe/gang feeling of wearing the same logo/brand starting with his Spring 2010 collection. Designing a brand’s logo and building a brand’s identity from that point on is a challenge for any designer out there. Inspiration and creativity bond together in this very special project of branding/logoing. But at some point, things got further and deeper. At some point, brands, logos became more powerful than the brands, images took over speeding the entire non/fashion process. This is a great initiative to freshen up the perspective on fashion and bring some consistency to the way we dress.

Wearing this and that should never be a question of label or logo. It should be conditioned by the way it feels/fits. Being honest with your wardrobe and your mirror is a great challenge and Freshjive’s initiative is the path to sanitize fashion. Would you take it? (The Hundreds via PSFK)

I had to settle for a simple red piece (I was specifically looking for something red or red-ish) and call it quits before I got angry for not having found exactly was I hoping for. Today my eyes were enchanted at the view of Tour De Force’s fierce headbands! Let me explain why in images! (more after the jump!)

Whether it’s a headband or a headpiece, things are never simple with Tour de Force! But even though they make quite elaborate and doubtlessly daring hair accessories, Tour de Force’s pieces are remarkably interesting and appealing! I could choose one of those ginormous layered bows as headband anyday! (not to mention that if you’re having a bad hair day, a Tour de Force piece will surely take the attention away from those undisciplined tresses!)

Sourcing for inspiration in our very television culture, Jennifer Behr usually made easy-gossip girl headpieces only this time she thought a punk rock spin would be in order so behold the goth installment this Fall! (the story continues with more pictures right after the jump!)

I’m definitely in love with headbands. My curly, frizzy hair leaves me no other taming option than a chic hair piece to get through a bad hair day with my head up. I usually am my own stylist/designer, I make my own headbands using fabric leftovers or bow ties (oh, yes, did you know you could use velvet bow ties to make yourself the cutest and simplest headwrap ever?), hair accessories I don’t use anymore (colored bow pins that I attach to a simple head band) and so on. Now I admit I’m most puzzled by the goth turn of hair fashion!

For one I’m not easily turning to goth, no matter the fash-importance levels it’ll reach. And second: I can’t really see myself buckling the toddlers in their respective car seats while I’m wearing a studded headband! They get so easily tangled in my hair, I could hurt them with those spikes. But then again, it all looks so delicate and artfully put together chez Jennifer Behr, I could convince myself to give into temptation on one of those rare nights out me and my wonderful Husband magically share every now and then!

In the pro/cons column, the capital con is the price for Jennifer Behr’s headwraps. Being popular in the Hollywood ranks, instantly pumps the volume of the price tag. (the simplest studded headwrap costs $142 chez Jennifer Behr. Not easy to be a punk princess these days!) That plus the edgy feeling of this Fall 2009 Jennifer Behr head pieces collection put her beautiful pieces out of my reach. How about you? Are you (still) a headband girl? Exploring and twisting fabric at one’s desire is something I wished for all my life but there’s only a handful of truly gifted fabric magicians and Marit is definitely one of those! The graphic way of turning textiles around into making an impossibly beautiful frock falls right in line with Irina Sharapova’s imaginative knitzilla pieces.
