Come November 2014, you will be able to buy pieces designed by Alexander Wang in selected H&M stores worldwide. Who is Wang and why is he so fashion-relevant as to queue up in front of your nearest H&M door in a month from now?
At just 30, Alexander Wang, although a famous dropout of Parsons after just two years, he took New York Fashion Week’s catwalks by storm with his first collection in 2007 while in 2013 he was dressing the United States of America’s First Lady for the Inauguration Ball! He designs for his namesake brand (and an additional, more affordable, casual label T by Alexander Wang) and the Balenciaga house since 2012. Impressive curriculum so far! Statistically, he’s the youngest guest-designer in H&M’s history of collaborations, thus relatively unknown for the wider audiences.
With a defined relaxed, casual, sports-sophisticated style of his own, Wang is cut out to make fashion history and we’ve seen prodigious labels working with H&M before (Viktor&Rolf or Maison Martin Margiela). Not everyone has a couture-solid reputation like Karl Lagerfeld (who was the first designer teaming up with the giant Swedish retailer) so why would we invest in Wang’s collection when some of the latest such initiatives were a fiasco (MMM had very poor sales)? Tactically thinking, this collection is perfectly timed – why? Read on!
Sport infused footwear and clutch-like handbags still go strong for the following Spring Summer 2015 season for which designers are presenting their collections even as we write these lines! While utilitarian sandals were ‘a must’ last summer, next year, the accessories get more refined but still keep their active-sportive allure.
Alexander Wang Spring Summer 2015 drops pretty much at the same time as this fantastic collaboration with H&M (officially launching next month, making fashionistas-worldwide sigh in a collection fashion ecstasy). A strategic fashion planner would definitely advise you to invest in some key pieces from the capsule collection for the giant Swedish fashion retailer as Wang’s designed slightly similar looks for his new Pret-a-porter collection.
Velcro fastening for sandals seems like the convenient thing to wear (I know a handful of little girls who would love to play dress-up with such easy-to-put-on sandals!) and protective rims for the toenails look like Heaven-sent (although mighty bulky, awkward and un-stylish).
If I didn’t know any better, I’d go for a collaboration with United Nude as Wang’s booties have that special air we’ve seen and fell in love with in United Nude’s footwear design for years! It may very well be a last-season sneaker dilution on a high heel note. Either way, Wang seems determined to keep his fashion comfortable&active and his designs for H&M definitely reflect that.
The same goes for his handbags: with very eclectic combinations and transformative virtues, the Alexander Wang Spring Summer 2015 handbags have clutch dimensions but roomy totes allures. Something about them seems very technical and action-ready while the color palette and the intricate pattern details make them stand out. It’s all a game of fashion textures for Wang, get in his style ring and play! And while you’re at it, get in the line for his H&M collection next month!
