For Rihanna, who just received the Fashion Icon Award at the 2014 CFDA ceremony was recently complaining that she has nothing more to wear. Naturally, the world was asking what will she wear, then, to the fashionable formal event, if she has nothing to wear?
The answer, as Rihanna found it, was just that: ‘nothing’! Showing up at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards 2014 in a completely sheer maxi dress matching her headscarf to her gown and long gloves.. Undoubtedly beautiful beyond words, Rihanna feeds herself with controversy soup, gossip grill with a lot of ‘what the…’ sauce on the side! She’s serving herself ice-cold with sprinkles of honesty and drama, letting us savor her youth to the last drop as the utmost delicious nectar on the Celebrity altar.
Adam Selman’s sketches of the dress (&accessories) are by far the safest way to enjoy looking at what Rihanna was destined to wear at on the CFDA Awards stage this week (June 2, 2014). Over 216,000 Swarovski crystals were used to embellish the dress, gloves and headscarf, helping her shine like a true diamond for the haute fashion audience.
It’s a timeless game of peek-a-boo the world will never get tired of: from Cher back in 1992 to Britney Spear’s 2003 Toxic, back to Cher, Gaga, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez in 2012, the crown of crystal see-through wear goes now to Rihanna. In all justice as although intensively used for music videos and stage performances, rare are the completely sheer dresses on the Red Carpet.
Going back and forth from fashion to style, Anna Wintour presented Rihanna, her ‘tweeting buddy’ with an award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. A sort of recognition for highlighting all the ‘very expensive clothes’ as described by Rihanna, who already sifted through all the couture and the prêt-a-porter collections to date, pushing looks and cuts straight from the catwalk to the potential customer’s eyes.

Fashion is but an endless repetition and reinvention, style is what you build through your own personality and style will definitely stand the test of time whereas fashion will not. As the award’s title is ‘Fashion Icon’, I think it’s very becoming for Rihanna. And the dress she was wearing was very much her way of telling what she expressed in her acceptance speech: ‘they may beat me, but they’ll never beat my outfit’.
What does fashion mean to you?
