Luther’s Idris Elba In GQ, The Cool Issue

The waiting is hard. Especially when one of the best TV series that’s ever been created is involved! But GQ knows that, and it’s capitalizing on our Luther love with Idris Elba as the cover star of their Cool Issue, March 2013.

Wait, there’s more! The Norman Jean Roy shot pictorial looks really promising, in Idris’ ‘bring it on’ style while the interview announces itself in a clever cover line: ’explosive interview’. Not that we’d expect anything less from Luther!

But everyone is expecting the new season and in the mean time we’re just playing rumors. Like, for instance, our favorite rumor card – that Idris Elba is set to be the next James Bond! Which, honestly, I find it hard to believe. And not because I doubt mr Elba’s acting capacities, but because I always look at spy characters as the blending – in types. Physically, Idris Elba is not one to blend in. His stature, his attitude, it’s hard to believe he’ll pass unnoticed. I’m convinced he’d deliver an excellent Bond if ever given the opportunity, but also a deeply memorable one. The spy you can pick out in the crowd.

But GQ is spinning this rumor mill from 2012 when Idris first made it to its cover. I almost feel like they (Sony, the big movie hotshots) are submitting a poll with every ‘Bond – Idris Elba’ pitch line. The answer is yes, everybody would love to see Idris Elba doing James Bond. Can we please move forward to actually doing it? And, by the way, Idris said it better:

Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.

Or maybe he’ll reprise The Wire kind of character, even for a Bond movie? Oh, look at me: I loved Skyfall, I rarely go through the day without listening Adele’s soundtrack theme song and I’m already talking about the next James Bond! Where are my manners? Luther, do please come back! And thank you for bringing Alice with you!

As for the James Bond thing Kpriss.
Bond NEVER blends in. Everyone knows who he is whenever they come across him, which is rather silly but that is always the case. Sean Connery was mos def not the type to blend in, nor was Roger Moore, or Pierce Bronson. One would mos def notice these men walking into a room. So Idris as Bond would be just dandy. : )

hmm… you may have a point there, now that I think about it, Sean Connery was certainly not the blending in type. You’re right: all Bond guys look fetchingly peonish.

definitely pitching us with Bond Idris! I for one, I’d love it, even if Daniel Craig’s Bond grew on me considerably!

I’m not a Bond fan…..I loved Ian Flemings books and Sean Connery is the best Bond to me. But way ramble about who’s the best?
Look at that…..sighs…..not the “next anything” or just “someone”….sighs again…..

More males like that please? ;)

Luv this man & his Body of work!
But Bond is too Indigenous British & stuck in our psyche so – IMO. The 21st century needs new characters & actors to make them their own & make us totally believe in them.
The Bond franchise needs resting / retiring so it can fade into 20th century legend. While I’m on my soapbox – I too wish the blockbuster would disapate & allow a gentler & broader form of storytelling would become popular – just my thoughts / opinions.
