I struggle hard to part Barbie and fuchsia. But somehow, inexorably, they come together like butter and toast. Barbie goes with pink, pink goes with Barbie (and Betsey Johnson, true!).
Barbie just fêted her 50th Birthday this month (do you imagine the insane amount of plastic interventions she suffered to still look exactly the same she did her first day ever?). To honor this special event, Mattel revealed Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. (don’t miss the rest of the pictures right after the jump!)
The Barbie Mansion is a 3,500 square foot house located in Malibu and it was designed by Happy Chic Jonathan Adler (Simon Doonan husband. or wife. Hm, you get the general idea!). The house is not (yet) opened to the public so these pictures are (for now) as close as possible you’ll get to Barbie’s new Malibu Dream Home.
The good news is, in May, Happy Chic’s Jonathan Adler will be taking some of the unique dedicated design he put into this Barbie Mansion and he’ll make a Barbie suite at the Palms Hotel (Las Vegas). That room shall be opened for visitations as well as rentals. There’s also something else you should know about Mattel’s Barbie dolls: for just one week, the legendary dolls will be sold $3 each (at select stores). That’s Barbie’s price, 50 years ago, her debut in 1959, New York Toy Fair.
Getting back to the Barbie Malibu Mansion – I have to tell you there’s a chandelier made of Barbie’s hair in the Warhol-ic living room (and man, that looks hideous!); a sunburst mirror made of 65 Barbie dolls (a futuristic mirror since it’s Barbie’s only 50th anniversary, not the 65th); a shoes closet that would make the green-envy of any fashionista – thousands of shoes lie there! (don’t worry, though! They all look the same. Not to mention they’re pink!)
