Adriana, your story (your grandmother’s story, in fact) is very emotional and you have every reason to cherish those earrings! Wish I would have inherited such beautiful memories too! Anyway I went down the “misfortune” line and I found this explanation :
“It is believed that cracks and ridges in a Pearl might be injurious to ones health. The Pearls should be moonlike shinning without dents and blemishes. They should be spotless, compact and perfectly round in shape. It is believed that dents cause loss of wealth and any wavy thin line on its surface brings misfortune. Pearl without luster shortens life.”

Those ancient ones were really exigent with the gemstones it seems! And they lead strange marketing campaigns too! Alluring people with perfection and assuring them misfortune if else!

kpriss, of course I would love to own a real pearls. I’ve been often in jewelry shops to look and touch them. The difference is noticeable.
Pearls bring misfortune? I’ve never heard that! Certainly not to my grandmother she became 94 and was a fun and very open minded woman until the end. Strong and fierce. She was a working class woman so her pearl earrings meant the world to her. She could conquer anything and she was proud for what she was! So no, therefore I can not believe this story…….

I like pearls too. I even have a few strands myself (they’re not natural ;) ) and still I dream of the Chanel one… I remember seeing it in “The Devil Wears Prada” and finding it perfect. Even so, I once heard someone saying that natural pearls bring misfortune. I don’t believe in such things, but did you ever heard about it?

never… pearls will NEVER be out of style and i wear pearls most everyday… if not a necklace then earrings. they’re just perfect for completing any outfit if you’re going for a chic but simple look.

Never. Although I do only wear fake-pearls alas. I can’t afford real ones. But I don’t care. And no one around me cares.
I do cherish some real pearl earrings which once did belong to my grandmother. The design is not for every day-wear. Beautiful though for special occassions.
